Feature : Loughborough University's School of Business and Economics

As a leading provider of part-time MBAs for more than 25 years, Loughborough University empowers self-motivated people with the will to succeed, building on the university’s strong focus on enterprise, innovation and practical application

Currently expanding its MBA offering, students enrolling in 2012 have the choice of taking the traditional part-time programme or one of two new MBAs – a full-time MBA and a part-time International Sports Management MBA.

In today’s rapidly changing global business environment, Loughborough University believes the best managers will be those who can adapt to changing circumstances to seize opportunities and operate effectively when managing complexity. As such, all three of Loughborough’s MBAs are dedicated to developing dynamic leaders equipped to thrive in any business context.

Tomorrow’s way of doing business

Most MBAs offer a strong foundation in the building blocks of organisational management, managing people, information, funds and resources. They also consider organisational strategy, markets and business environments.

The Loughborough MBA goes further; we want our graduates to stand out from the crowd and be equipped to succeed in facing tomorrow's challenges, not yesterday's. So, embedded throughout all three MBAs, is an approach to management decision making that recognises and addresses the issues of tomorrow: managing scarcity; sustainability and alternate forms of ownership and governance provided through social enterprises and mutuals.

Apply your knowledge and stand out

MBAs should add value. They add commercial value for a sponsor who gains improvements in organisational efficiency, effectiveness and competitiveness. They also bring value to individual students by both developing the skills and knowledge that give them an advantage when seeking to develop their careers, and by encouraging them to develop relationships and networks that endure beyond the time spent on the programme.

At Loughborough, the philosophy that underpins all that we do is the application of knowledge and skills in real situations addressing real issues. With our part-time students this involves them applying learning directly back into the workplace. With our newly launched full-time MBA, we develop relationships with leading organisations that allow our students to work directly with them solving real problems and generating real initiatives, explains Stuart.

The Managing Innovation module, unique to the UK, gives both full and part-time students the chance to work with technologists on an assignment that requires them to evaluate and produce a commercialisation strategy for a newly developed technology. This opportunity could even act as a springboard for enterprising students looking to start their own business.

Specialising in sport

In addition to the full-time programme, the university is also launching a new part-time International Sports MBA, specifically tailored for working professionals seeking career advancement within the rapidly expanding global sports industry. It addresses the governance challenges within world sport. With Team GB based on campus this year ahead of the Olympics, and with modules drawing on Loughborough University’s world renowned sporting expertise, it’s an exciting time to be launching such a unique MBA.

Loughborough is a leading university with a great reputation. It continually comes top in polls regarding student satisfaction and this reflects the emphasis placed upon the quality and the relevance of the teaching. 'It is only when you get to work here that you fully realise how well justified this is, adds Stuart.

Case study

Emma Rosamond is currently studying for an MBA at Loughborough University

The learning environment is excellent and there is a broad spectrum of students whose personal and professional experience enriches the learning process.

Since beginning the MBA, I have developed a more comprehensive, well-rounded view of business and its needs and constraints, which has improved the way I work with both clients and colleagues.

Loughborough University’s reputation and the requirement for 'executive' relevant business experience led me to choose this MBA. Before starting the course, I was a team leader for a group of 13 project managers and engineers at an international research organisation. I wanted to improve my business acumen and develop a more rounded understanding of business and its various functional requirements.

Sharing experiences and learning from others on the programme has given me an invaluable insight into many industries and their requirements. This, alongside the material taught on the course, has allowed me to identify, interpret and assess scenarios in different ways by applying the relevant business theory I’ve studied.

Taking the MBA at Loughborough has been a brilliant experience and I would strongly recommend it. I have benefited from the continuous support of colleagues and academic staff, and excellent educational facilities. I have been self-funded and do not resent a pound!
