Charles Oben graduated from the University of Warwick with a degree in French with International Studies. He is now pursuing a career in advertising.
Some 24.8% of graduates are unemployed, official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed earlier this year. That's almost identical to the figures for school leavers with one GCSE at grade C. Luckily, I’m no longer part of this group of people, as I was recently lucky enough to secure a job.
Simply put, I'm a Sales intern for Adconion Media Group, a performance-based audience network. Adconion, amongst other things, runs online display campaigns and try and get people to interact with them. I'm involved in setting up the process.
Lately I've been asking my colleagues to bring it on, then to bring it on again, and again, and again - figuratively speaking of course. You could say I've just been asking for more responsibility. But that doesn’t sound as fun. Soon enough, my wish was granted and now I'm managing five campaigns. The training wheels are off.
A smart man once told me, 'Don't let your job description dictate what you do.' I don’t remember his name, but I think he's right. I've certainly pushed to get involved in other aspects of the business that aren't directly related to my role, and have been rewarded for it.
For example, I had an idea for a blog post focused around the new interns, which recently got the go ahead and will feature in the company’s next quarterly magazine. I won't pretend I'm not excited.
I recommend all interns to give this approach a try because it definitely helps.
Apart from that I've been writing as much as possible. I've also managed to secure a freelance copywriting role for a new start-up company. I wrote my first product descriptions not too long ago, before trying my hand at rewriting some website copy. The client was pleased on both accounts. Surprisingly enough, I was pleased that he was pleased. But that’s not what has pleased me the most this past month.
The icing on the cake came a bit later on when I decided to do one of the smartest things I've done all year – I made an email signature. So now every time I send an email, the message signs off with links to my blog and Facebook fan page. If you're a writer, you should try it. I honestly didn't think people would click on it without knowing me first. I was wrong.
So that's it. Another month has flown by.
P.S. I'm moving house again. The truth is I'm a vagabond. Don't tell anyone.
