Blogs: Jack's job log: 19

Written by Jack Milner, January 2012

Jack has finished his degree. His job hunt is proving a long and difficult road.

Well ladies and gentlemen, another year down, which takes this blog into its third year. A phenomenal achievement for an emotionally crippled, financially irresponsible and temperamental Yorkshireman.

The fact that I’m even able to write down my perverted thoughts for the world to read, judge and chuckle over, doesn't come close to describing the sick human being I am.

Anyway, monologues aside, 2011 in review could be a long reflection, so I’ll cut to the chase and give a brief synopsis of the life of a 24-year-old dreamer, with 24-carat ambitions.

At the start of the year I was a cashier with Coral, in a job I enjoyed. With lofty aspirations to one day (approximately 22 years’ time) be running the company. I’d also started contributing to The Racing Forum, however, with little experience, I didn't know what to expect.

I was in a successful five-a-side team that then imploded; a similar thing happened with the cricket team, and the rugby and darts were more or less written off.

With my employment, I had no real plans for an overhaul or to search for an opening in the real world. I was content in my job - I’d done the role part time while at uni and I’d enjoyed it. So there was no imminent plan to seek a real job with a graduate scheme and weekends and bank holidays off. It’s the little things, eh?

A year on, let’s see… Well, I made a steady transition from being a simple cashier, floating between assistant and deputy manager, depending on superiors and conditions.

The takeover of the company seems a distant memory from my original lofty dreams of a one man dictatorship, creating the largest, most superior betting shop chain in the world, combining traditional punting with new age exchanges.

By 2013, I doubt I’ll be with the same company, due to the constant politics and hearsay, which is shocking for such a small chain of betting shops in a confined area.

To summarise, the football team imploded; the family is near an implosion. I appeared on Cricket AM on Sky Sports and, as luck would have it, it jinxed us and we lost in the semi finals of the cup the week after. I’m the captain of The Black Bull darts team, however we’re bottom of the league and my boy Gary Anderson lost out in the quarter finals of the World Championships.

So eventful; so much drama, embarrassment, highs and lows. From being a big shot at York races, to the crushing tedium of work, to writing successful tipping columns, and the employment suicide I commit on a seemingly daily basis. Hope you were all entertained. Let’s raise a glass to another year.
