Matt Stocks did a six-week summer internship at BDO before becoming an audit semi senior with the company.
It was apparent that BDO provided all the attributes of the Big Four whilst also providing greater client exposure via the mid-market. BDO’s commitment to client service was evident from the outset and is reflected in the industry awards that they have won. They came across as a very friendly and approachable firm and are very focused on supporting their staff and valuing each employee as an individual.
The internship application process was straightforward but you needed to pass each stage. I applied online, took the ability tests, had a first round interview and then attended an assessment day. In the first week all of the interns met in London for an induction and technical training course. I then joined the business for four and a half weeks. The final two days of the internship were spent back in London for a CSR event, social evening and final presentation to the business.

Apart from the job offer, the best thing about my placement was how much exposure I received with clients and partners and the confidence BDO had in me to give me a real experience. The most difficult aspect was that I had to learn quickly and work towards deadlines. This was somewhat a shock from my prior summer as a student. However, this proved to be very worthwhile.
Doing a placement is a great experience that opens many doors. BDO has a very friendly and supportive environment. You need to use the time wisely to gain experience with clients and partners. Deliver your best to the clients and remember - don’t be afraid to ask questions.
