Case studies : CAD designer: Chris

Chris entered this field of work after completing a BSc degree at the University of Wolverhampton in computer-aided product design. He feels that his degree gave him an essential underpinning knowledge of the design process and of the computer packages which he now uses every day.

Chris works as a computer-aided deisgn (CAD) designer for LEEC which is one of the leading UK specialists in designing and manufacturing mortuary and laboratory equipment.

When a client initially contacts the sales team, Chris’ job is to create an initial 2D mortuary layout proposal for the client to show how the new equipment will fit into the desired dimensions. Once an order has been placed, he uses 3D CAD modelling techniques to design the equipment and to produce technical drawings which will be used in the manufacturing process.

The primary software that he uses is Solid Edge ST (synchronous Technology) but sometimes AutoCAD is required to view and amend files sent by clients.

After graduating, Chris used an agency to secure a temporary position as a technical assistant with Greene Tweed: a company that designs and manufactures component parts for a variety of markets including the aerospace, defence and pharmaceutical industries. His initial six-week contract was extended to a year, allowing him to build on the skills and knowledge that he developed at university and giving him useful experience which helped him to secure his present job at LEEC.

Chris feels that a passion for design and computers is essential for anyone wishing to enter a role such as his, as well as confidence, imagination, initiative and a desire to learn.
