Anna has a degree in genetics. She is currently a clinical cytogeneticist.
I was initially interested in fine art and studied art, Welsh and biology for A-levels. I enjoyed the genetics aspect of my biology A-level and chose to progress on to a BSc Honours Degree in Genetics.
While on my degree I was given the opportunity to carry out a final year project laboratory experience. This helped me decide that a laboratory-based career was for me. After completing my degree I gained employment as a medical laboratory assistant, was promoted to medical technical officer and applied for a training post to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Cytogenetics.
My BSc in Genetics, knowledge of FISH and fluoresceins from previous employment, and experience of working in a laboratory prior to applying for the training post, all helped my application to be successful. I recommend that applicants should have a BSc in a biological science to succeed in cytogenetics. Work experience in a cytogenetics laboratory, experience or knowledge of RT-PCR, microarrays or MLPA and good presentation skills would also be an advantage. The ability to work under pressure and have close attention to detail are other valuable skills to have.
Key responsibilities in my current role are chromosomal analysis and work as a duty scientist within the prenatal (amniotic fluid) section. In my role I perform chromosome analysis, mainly G-banded, fluorescence in situ hybridisation, tissue culture and PCR. On a day-to-day basis I deal with other scientists within the department, consultants and GPs. During my training I have had to complete a postgraduate certificate in clinical cytogenetics (PCG) and am currently working on post PGC training towards state registration.
Although my job has involved a great deal of training and revision for exams (often undertaken outside normal working hours) I enjoy the role, the good salary, the encouragement to progress in my career by obtaining qualifications, as well as the responsibility entailed and the ability to carry out interesting, independent work without constant supervision.
