Case studies: Consultant clinical molecular geneticist: James

James runs an outpatient clinic in a children's hospital.

I had very vague or non-existent career ideas at school. I liked science and human biology, and took A-levels in biology, chemistry and physics. I was inspired by a role model to apply for medicine. It seemed an interesting thing to do, the university I chose had a new, innovative, interesting course and it meant I could practise as a doctor.

During my degree I was able to develop a wide range of transferable skills, including communication, time management, leadership, problem-solving and teamworking which were all essential in my current role. I chose to move into clinical molecular genetics after a significant period of postgraduate experience and study in medicine, paediatrics and genetics. I thoroughly enjoyed molecular genetics and felt it was an area I wanted to progress into. I chose to develop my knowledge and understanding of the topic through a second degree.

I now run an outpatient clinic in a children's hospital, where I see people with multiple congenital abnormalities (birth defects) and give advice and guidance on medical management, treatment, risks to other family members and whether there is likely to be an underlying genetic cause. My key responsibilities are to provide optimal clinical care to these families. On a day-to-day basis I network with other health professionals such as nurses, genetic counsellors, laboratory scientists and my colleagues.

An essential skill, necessary for me to carry out my role successfully, is the ability to communicate complex concepts to people from all backgrounds and often to people with special educational needs.

Although giving bad news is a less enjoyable aspect of my role I gain great satisfaction in helping people understand things, relieving anxiety and problem solving.
