Rebecca graduated from the University of Kent in law and accounting and finance and works in the London Tax Group.
I chose BDO because it was personally recommended to me by my manager while I was undertaking a summer internship for an insurance company. He had worked for many of the large accountancy firms during his career, but thought BDO was the best by far. Reputation goes a long way!
I currently work on the compliance side of Corporation Tax, and have worked with numerous companies varying in size and nature; a real mixed bag. Tax is primarily office based, but there are opportunities to go out, particularly on client visits. I have found the ‘world of tax’ so far to be an exciting, constantly changing place. Sometimes it can be a challenge to keep up with all the legislative changes – but if everything were easy, where would be the fun?
The thing I most like about my job, despite it sounding corny, would be the people I work with. Everyone at BDO is incredibly friendly from day one and within your intake you will undoubtedly make some true friends. There is always something fun to get involved in or do. From initial induction activities, monthly drinks, fundraisers, quiz nights to sports activities and teams (I currently play on the netball team). The new London office where I work, on Baker Street, is also a lovely environment to work in.
My words of advice for someone considering a career in chartered accountancy, are to make sure you choose the right firm and the right role for you. It is really important that you do the research before you start applying, otherwise you may be stumped when you come to the interview. The studying is hard, but you are provided with all the support you could require and are working alongside other like-minded individuals. A finance-based degree can give you a head start but is not crucial, as it is a steep learning curve for everyone.
