Case studies : Team Leader with City Year: Rodney Williams

Rodney Williams worked with City Year as a Team Leader for 12 months, the skills and experience he has gained have built on the skills gained at university.

City Year had a big impact on my life. It provided me with additional skills and experience I wasn’t able to gain from university. For instance, my time as a Team Leader at Whitmore Primary School provided me with new responsibility and gave me the opportunity to develop as a leader; both of which have proved very useful in my current job.

Having had an amazing 12 months with City Year, I’ve now started my career with National Grid. I am currently working in the UK Construction department as a Project Officer based on the London Cable Tunnels Project.  I heard so much about this project whilst I was a corps member with the National Grid team which served at Whitmore Primary School, so being able to work on it – and to see how important it is to the city – is just fantastic.

My role as a Project Officer involves dealing with the commercial side of the project; carrying out tasks involving finance, forecasting and document control. I also help out with community involvement events; such as presenting at engineering events and hosting sessions at the Energy Education Centre in Willesden Junction.

City Year also provided me with professional links to renowned companies. Throughout the year I worked with a great team that I still keep in contact with.
