Case studies : Graduate engineer: Dan

Dan graduated with a BSc in Engineering Physics from Loughborough University, and now works for Roke Manor Research as a graduate engineer

Roke Manor Research manages to balance sophisticated high-tech, nationally important research and technology with a friendly university campus-like atmosphere.

The company appealed as a graduate employer due to the sheer variety of projects it is involved with - across multiple industries - as well as the impressive development initiatives that underpin the two-year graduate scheme. These have so far involved numerous training courses, a mentor and buddy scheme, plenty of support from senior colleagues, as well as regular feedback.

As a graduate within the systems engineering and consultancy team, I have been involved in research to help advise the Ministry of Defence identify future technology that will support soldiers operating on the frontline in the future. Additionally, I have helped with decision support techniques that support investment decisions for developing the future communications network structure across air, land and sea domains. My work has already involved meeting a diverse array of individuals and visiting some very interesting places.

As an engineering physics graduate with a generally inquisitive nature, I hoped for a role that would involve the application of cutting-edge technology to real-life problems. I can safely say my experiences to date have delivered this. I believe helping enhance the safety of soldiers faced with difficult conditions while keeping up with developing technology trends offers a highly rewarding career choice.

Roke provides a lot of chances to get involved in activities outside of work, running a large number of clubs and societies that cater to a broad range of interests. I personally attend football weekly, and regularly use the on-site gym. There are also clubs aimed at those who like cricket, swimming, kickboxing, music, photography, walking and almost any other activity you care to imagine.

As well as numerous social clubs, there are ample opportunities to get involved in various charity or educational events organised by the firm. I recently had the privilege of helping out in the 'child to work day', which was thoroughly enjoyable. There are regular charity-driven evenings, challenges (such as the Three Peaks challenge) and collections for a range of different causes.
