Case studies : Internet Services Manager at RSC: Will Russell

Will Russell studied computer science at the University of Kent before taking on a number of helpdesk, infrastructure and development roles. He is an Internet Services Manager at RSC but is currently seconded to Manager, Innovation and Product Development.

When I arrive at work in the morning, the first thing I do is check a display screen. If it's flashing green, that's good news. It means that all the RSC websites I manage are working well. Red, on the other hand, suggests a potential problem and I need to spring into action. The Society is international and so people may want to access key information at any time and the operation needs to work seamlessly 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

I'm also involved in larger projects. We've been working on authentication systems for university access, for instance. We've also always got to be on guard against the impact of malicious malware.

Originally, I joined the RSC on a summer placement and didn't know anything about the organisation. I soon realised what an enthusiastic, forward-thinking place it is. Now, I get lots of customer liaison, I manage a team of five and I keep my hand in with IT. It's a dream job.
