Case studies: Health improvement specialist: Andy

Andy studied for a Diploma in Promoting Public Health with the Open University in 2002.

After completing my qualification I really wanted to get a job that was relevant and began searching in newspapers and online for suitable vacancies. I came across my current role of health improvement specialist in the local press and was really pleased to be offered the job after completing the application process.

My qualification is essential to the day to day work in my role and has really helped with the background knowledge needed. A typical day in my current job involves carrying out various office-related tasks. I also play a big part in leading the coordination, development and implementation of specific public health projects and programmes. I work in partnership with local authorities to raise the awareness of key public health priorities as well.

The role has developed since I’ve been in the position and I now carry out more work in partnership with key agencies.

I really enjoy the variety of working in different programmes such as promoting physical activity or smoking cessation. However, being the sole public health representative in my local area is also very challenging.

Improving the populations’ health is definitely one of the best things about working in this area and you get a real sense of achievement from having helped people.

If you want to help to improve people’s health and well being and reduce inequalities in health then this is a good career choice.
