Case studies: Self-employed homeopath: Selina

As a manager in the textile industry, Selina felt unfulfilled and decided that she needed a change to a career that involved helping others...

Selina decided on homeopathy after consulting a homeopath for her own health and being really pleased with the result.

Selina studied her course at the Centre for Homeopathic Education, London, for four years part time, which included clinical training. She feels that good listening and communication skills are essential, and that marketing skills are very useful when building your own practice. In terms of personal qualities, general confidence, flexibility, physical fitness, and the ability to constantly develop oneself mentally and emotionally are all very important.

Regarding her working day, Selina says, 'My days differ depending on how many patients I'm seeing. I have to manage my time efficiently and be well organised. It can be quite isolating at times, but I also work part time in a homeopathic pharmacy alongside my private practice work, which is very demanding, but less isolated.

'The job is very varied, but the part I enjoy most is being able to help and facilitate change in others. You get to meet loads of lovely people and have the privilege of hearing their life stories. The worst part for me is the business and marketing side - I haven't been practising for very long, so having to constantly find new patients is challenging.'

To graduates seeking a career as a homeopath, Selina says, 'The typical career path for most is to start their own practice working from home or in a clinic. There are a few homeopathic pharmacies that employ students and qualified homeopaths. Some people teach as well as supervise other students.

'First and foremost, talk to as many people as possible. Sit in with practising homeopaths so that you really understand the responsibilities involved. Work out how much the training will cost you in total (e.g. fees, travel, books etc). Ensure that you're really happy to work alone and manage all aspects of your practice/business. Also, see a homeopath yourself for at least several months before making the final decision.'
