Shona graduated in 2004 from Glasgow Caledonian University with a postgraduate diploma in human resource management. She now works for Tesco as a human resource manager.
After graduating with my retail management degree in 2002, I decided to return to education and in 2004 I returned to university and studied for my postgraduate diploma in human resource management.
I wanted to work for a large organisation where there was an opportunity for development and possible international experience. To apply, I had to complete an application form and attended an assessment centre before being offered the position.
I enjoyed my time on the graduate scheme, which was well thought out and gave me an opportunity to gain a lot of experience in store. Whilst a lot of the theories studied on my course did not relate to the real world, it did give me a foundation from which to build off - though it was a steep learning curve.
My role involves management development, advising on policy and procedures, dealing with discipline and grievance issues. I am also involved in succession planning. For up to four hours a day I am duty manager. I am also required to attend team meetings, support absence and performance monitor one to ones, which may then require additional coaching and training.
There is no such thing as a typical day, and the varied nature of role is one that I enjoy. I especially enjoy the fact that you can see results quickly - but you need to be sure people are clear on your vision and everyone takes responsibility for themselves.
My career goal is to progress to head office and perhaps even to be HR director one day. Any graduate considering a career in retail should be aware that it is hard work - more than a tin of beans! However, the key to success is definitely leadership.
