Case studies: Consultant immunologist: Michael

Michael's medical experiences and higher specialist training enabled him to progress to be lead in a regional diagnostic laboratory and specialist clinical referral unit for primary immunodeficiency, allergy and autoimmunity

Michael's initial career idea at school was medicine, as he enjoyed science and wanted to specialise in this area. After his A-levels, he went on to Queen's University, Belfast to study for a BSc Honours in Medical Microbiology. Whilst studying, he developed a special interest in immunology. After completing this degree, he followed it up with a medical degree, again at Queen's University.

During his degrees, Michael gained a wide range of transferable skills and a great deal of practical exposure within his medical course. His medical experiences and higher specialist training enabled him to progress to be lead in a regional diagnostic laboratory and specialist clinical referral unit for primary immunodeficiency, allergy and autoimmunity.

On a day-to-day basis, Michael deals with patients, nurses, scientists, managers and feels that persistence is a key requirement for working in this area. Although he feels there can be problems dealing with NHS management, he enjoys the challenge of diagnosing and treating people with unusual or rare conditions and gains great satisfaction in this.

Since starting work, Michael has been given the opportunity for continuous professional development. His long-term aim is to develop the department and trainees in order to enhance the clinical service.
