Case studies: Glasgow Caledonian University: Shivangi Samarth

Shivangi is studying for an MSc in Operations and Business Management at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). She has already achieved a Masters in Commerce with majors in management from Mumbai University.

My studies in India had highlighted the importance of studying management, which encouraged me to take up a course providing in-depth knowledge of the subject. After going through the different courses provided by various institutions, I realised that the MSc in Operations and Business Management offered by GCU was the best. It provides thorough knowledge of the required managerial skills and competencies, which makes graduates suitable candidates for a large number of careers.

The support provided by GCU to international students was exemplary, which made it very easy to settle into the new environment. Student mentors were appointed by the University to provide guidance on the first day, but they also helped throughout the duration of the course. The course programme director and the tutors were extremely approachable and helped to solve all types of queries, and I enjoyed getting to know the local culture and new surroundings.

Every module I studied required taking up a different task relating to the different areas of business, such as marketing research, finance, project management, operations management and conducting data analysis.

All our modules required us to work on major research and analysis reports along with carrying out business simulation games to test our analytical skills. As well dissertations, our assessments also included exercises which focused on teamwork and developing presentation skills.

It has been a good experience studying for the course. The tutors have been extremely supportive at all times and have made me feel confident enough to deal with new challenges.

This course has taught me the importance of inter-personal skills combined with effective communication and time management. The study method, which focuses more heavily on self-study, taught me the importance of being proactive and independent.

Some of the best universities in the world are located in the UK. The international exposure that the course provides is a big boost when it comes to getting jobs in the competitive business industry. I aim to spend a couple of extra years in the UK to gain some work experience.

I would definitely recommend GCU to anyone planning to take up a postgraduate degree in an international institution. The study pattern followed here enhances the practical knowledge of the students and helps them to stand out in a competitive world.
