Case studies: IT project analyst: Salem Miah

Salem graduated with a BSc in Business Studies from the Cass Business School in London and now works for a major global financial services company via FDM's PMO (project management office) stream.

At FDM’s Academy, I gained a further four qualifications and other skills - all directly relevant to working in business. FDM’s intense initial training period enabled me to hit the ground running. Whilst the technical subjects taught were out of my comfort zone, I was able to successfully complete all modules with good grades, which boosted my confidence and self-belief that I can succeed.

FDM initially placed me as an FDM PMO consultant in various companies within industries ranging from investment banking to retail. My current role primarily deals with financials and business strategy. While my degree was a perfect fit, as my theoretical knowledge has helped me tremendously, skills acquired through the Academy also help me to be productive on a daily basis.

A typical day will include the analysis of cost and benefits from a programme view. Variance analysis is required to ensure that targets are met and business expectations are fulfilled. I will attend meetings to discuss our current financial state and how we need to adjust for the months ahead. Other meetings will include updates from all the stream leads to get an up-to-date picture of where the department stands in meeting milestones and the discussion of addressing/eliminating risks.

My role has continually grown after successful completion of initial tasks. From noting minutes and compiling slide decks, I have now devised the forecasting tool used by the department. Greater responsibility has helped me identify cost-saving opportunities and has enabled me to provide greater financial transparency. I aspire to become a project manager, whereby strategic decisions are made to increase productivity and enhance the bottom line.

The challenge of the job is what keeps me motivated - I enjoy solving problems and delivering tangible results. While timescales of work set can be challenging, I prioritise and plan my workload. The daily interaction with the management team also inspires me. Such close relationship with senior members of staff has enabled me to learn from the experts.

Within this sector, the interaction with professional people from different walks of life is encouraging. It is always exciting to learn different processes of achieving the same goal. I also enjoy the competitive nature of this industry. The goal is to hold a strong presence in the market place and to gain competitive advantage where possible.

It would have taken me many years to reach my current position. This experience has given me a head start and will inevitably enhance my career opportunities in the future. FDM provide the solution to the tricky situation of employers only seeking candidates with relevant experience.
