Case studies: Technology infrastructure analyst: Ashley Morris

Ashley is currently on a 12-month industrial placement for a multinational investment bank. He is working towards a BSc in Management and Information Technology at Lancaster University and is due to graduate in 2013.

I joined the investment bank on a 12-month industrial placement in June 2011. I feel it was a combination of previous experience and general enthusiasm for banking technology that has allowed me to pursue this career path.

My degree scheme provides a fusion between the core competencies of management and business combined with key technology ideologies. This consolidation of knowledge has provided a fundamental grounding that has allowed me to be relatively successful in my day-to-day role.

The role provides a basis for variety and flexibility, working with teams who design, develop and implement information systems in support of business goals. As the placement has evolved, I have been given countless opportunities to gain exposure to a number of senior leaders within the company. In addition, I have also become involved in a number of projects generating global stakeholder interest.

A typical day combines mainly project work with troubleshooting, liaising with my counterparts across the globe and a series of training/networking events. As these are all things that interest me deeply, my career aspirations are to secure a role in banking technology while working for a market-leading financial institution.

One of the key challenges I have faced since joining the programme is the transitional factors from student life to working life. The working styles and attitudes of investment banking create an ideal contrast to that of the 'student life'.  However, the fast-paced and rapidly changing nature of the investment banking industry paves the way for an exciting and diverse career, rich in empowerment and opportunity. On top of this, the ability to work with some of the brightest and most innovative people in the industry is extremely rewarding and provides an unrivalled learning platform.

My advice to anyone considering a role in banking technology is to be sure to carefully match your skill set and aspirations to a role in which you can excel and develop. Remember, an industrial placement is a great 'taster' of working life, so try and match this to your skill set and future career goals. Finally, an honest, flexible and enthusiastic approach to work will be appreciated by both your managers and your team alike.
