Patrick's vocational training and targeted job hunt lead to a job in his chosen field of architecture...
In order to ensure that I was seen above other applicants, I produced a graphical CV showing my educational and work experience, along with a well-written profile that indicated why I was the perfect candidate for the job.
After graduating from an architecture degree and a Diploma in Architecture, I took the time to reflect on the type and size of organisation that I would prefer to work with and then sent my CV and tailored covering letter to around 80-100 relevant firms. Geographically I looked mainly at the South, South East, and London, as well as selected firms in Bristol, Bath, and Manchester. I was pleased to be offered a position at Scott Wilson.
As the courses I completed were vocational, they were very relevant to my line of work. I chose to study at Portsmouth School of Architecture (Portsmouth University) due to the technical and sustainable elements of the course compared with many others which focused on mainly conceptual design.
Here at Scott Wilson, I am currently working on a new mechanical biological treatment plant in Bradford. I am designing a new visitor centre and helping to resolve the detail of the mechanical plant itself.
As an architectural graduate, I can be involved in meeting and liaising with clients and contractors and helping to design and detail buildings.
My sole focus at the present is to gain further job experience in order to enrol for the Masters in Professional Practice so that I can qualify as an architect.
All aspects of the job are challenging as each design I work on is a unique project and stretches my abilities. However, I really enjoy this as it means every day is different. I also like knowing that I can help build and shape the environments that we work and live in.
In this line of work the training is arduous, the hours are long, the pay isn't great but the rewards are substantial, so if you want to work in this area, go for it.
