Case studies: Intranet manager: Lenora Joseph

Lenora graduated with a BSc in Information Systems from City University before securing her current role. Her four-year degree involved a placement year in industry...

I spent my placement year at a web-hosting company, and this sparked my enthusiasm for a career in the online field. From there I went on to take a six-week vacation scheme on an intranet migration project, which later helped me to secure my first job post-graduation in the online communications team at the same company.

A typical working day in my current job involves:

  • developing and delivering training materials;
  • supporting those who create and publish content;
  • managing the requests for and maintaining the homepage of the site;
  • writing all stakeholder communications;
  • coaching the business on established best practice.

I enjoy the mix of customer service and online elements within my role. I am surrounded by colleagues with a similar love of the online space, whilst being afforded the opportunity to work with people from all areas of the business, providing opportunities to learn about and get involved with new and different projects. Managing the competing needs of different stakeholders can sometimes be challenging, but the end result is always ultimately rewarding.

Whilst not completely relevant, my degree gave me a solid foundation in many different computing concepts, both technical and business related. I could then go on to apply what I needed in the workplace.

It also provided me with a good understanding of software and requirements engineering, and a taste of multiple programming languages. Additionally, it gave me the chance to mix with other ambitious, like-minded people and helped to give an insight into what a career in IT might look like.
