Case studies: Materials engineer: Simon

Simon studied for a degree and then a PhD in Materials Engineering at the University of Cape Town. He is now a lead engineer within the energy business of an independent risk management organisation.

After completing my PhD, I worked as a research associate at a UK university. I then moved into a corrosion engineer role with my present employer and I am now a lead materials engineer there. My studies have played an important role in my career so far. They provided me with a thorough knowledge of materials, with laboratory experience and with skills in report writing, research and reasoning. Without these I wouldn’t have been in my present job.

I enjoy working in a small technical group that provides design review and specialist materials advice to internal and external clients.

Materials, corrosion and welding expertise is highly sought after in the oil and gas industry. Anyone with an interest and aptitude for a career in engineering should give it serious consideration.
