Dave studied MSci Physics at University College London (UCL).
I currently work as a streaming analytics researcher at GCHQ.
While researching different options, I came across GCHQ in a Google search. On reading more about the organisation I found that I valued their mission and felt I would fit in. It was fortunate that they happened to be recruiting for researchers at that time and so I applied directly to them.
My degree subject was not directly relevant as I previously had very little programming experience, so I’ve had to learn this on the job. However, my broader skills, such as problem solving and researching proved crucial in securing the job and continue to be used daily.
The main purpose of my role is to invent new ideas and solutions to a diverse range of intelligence problems and implement these through proof of concept software, for real world situations. I also regularly have to give presentations regarding my work and write technical reports, so good all round communication skills are helpful.
In GCHQ terms I’m still, after eighteen months, considered relatively new and I have a lot to learn yet. However, my role is developing every day and as I become more technically able I find I can tackle problems in a more intelligent way, meaning I can take on more challenging work.
The technical challenge combined with the knowledge that my work can have an impact on world events - something that would be impossible outside the intelligence community - make this a unique field to work in.
One of the most challenging aspects of my job is managing customer requirements as these can be fast changing. In order to overcome this I have to build in flexibility to everything I deliver, and be prepared to negotiate. Also, in the current climate I have to be mindful of resources and ensure that everything is fit for purpose and not wasteful.
I find it really interesting work, both in terms of what we are researching and in terms of the world platform we focus on. I never imagined I would be using my skills in such a practical way.
Until I entered the workplace I never really considered that I had lots of broader skills, such as teamworking, communication and flexibility. You can get bogged down in the technical ability or the nuances of the physics you’ve studied but actually for an employer the broader skills can often be just as important - if not more. Bear this in mind when you make your application.
Also, and this is based on my experience with GCHQ, be honest about who you are and your ability. Most employers can see through the people who don’t quite ‘have it’.
A career at GCHQ really does offer something different to the norm. If you want to blend your studies with technology while also helping to protect the country, then it is likely a career with the intelligence services will suit you.
