Joanne studied earth sciences at university and then completed an MSc in Sedimentology. She works for a major contractor in the field of wellsite geology and other geological services.
I completed a BSc in Earth Science from the Open University and decided to complete a Masters degree in Sedimentology to enhance my employment chances. I studied my MSc in Sedimentology at Reading University, specialising in geophysics.
I am a very determined person, but I learnt that the personal touch, phoning people (even in the department), making appointments to see them, joining in discussion groups, going to all lectures and seminars and asking lots of questions is the best way to proceed.
I sent out hundreds of CVs to various geological companies in the area of south England. I had two replies, so don’t be put off by the application process. Be persistent and learn as much as you can about the companies that offer the type of employment that is of interest to you. The first job is always the hardest to achieve.
I joined a geological company after leaving university, working as a wellsite geologist. My specific role is to create composite logs and final well reports, as well as to deal with quality control. This involves using a specialised software package for interpreting and analysing various data packages, which include wireline logs, gas logs and rock descriptions. The logs and well reports are sent to me from geologists of various clients throughout the world.
My role includes being able to complete all tasks that come my way. We have operations and wellsite geologists that work through us for various companies and we provide travel, accommodation, contracts, work orders, support and training.
I support the field geologists using our software drawing package in case they have any problems and also re-write the program to the specific needs of each client.
As a small company, each day is slightly different depending on the schedule. For anyone wanting to work in an office environment with trips to clients and trade fairs, as well as teaching students, manipulating software and solving problems, this is a great environment to be involved with.
