Gary studied for a BSc in Geography at Canterbury Christ Church University. He is now works for the Environment Agency, advising stakeholders on ways of minimising pollution hazards and organising and managing pollution awareness events
My geography degree is very useful for the role I am doing now. The techniques and themes that I studied in my degree, such as current pollutions facing the world, I now frequently use in my work, so it gave me a useful knowledge base to work for the Environment Agency.
My role at the agency is a graduate position, which I searched for on the agency's website. The application process for this position had several stages. I was initially required to complete an online application, which I did via the Environment Agency's recruitment web pages.
After being successful at the written application stage, I was invited to their recruitment day. The day comprised taking part in various recruitment tests, including group role plays and simulated situations that might happen in the position, and concluded with a formal interview. It was a long process, but I expected this as I was applying for a graduate position in a national organisation.
I enjoy the variety of work and the flexibility of my time that the position allows, as well as the location of my job. I was prepared to go anywhere in the UK and I enjoy the travel around South Wales that I do now. I feel that the sector in which I work is the right way for me to make my living.
There are challenges to my role, as in any profession; I am still learning to decipher complex EU and government policy, and on occasion I have to deal with confrontational situations. This is a positive as well, as it means that I am constantly adding to and developing my skills.
In five years' time, I would like to progress in the Environment Agency to the role of area team coordinator.
To be accepted to work in a graduate position such as this, I would advise others to work hard and obtain the best degree classification they can, as well as getting as much practical experience as possible. This will help you to develop strong social skills and confidence, which are essential in any work environment.
