About postgrad study: Costs and funding

search for: postgraduate courses

How much is postgraduate study likely to cost?

The two main expenses you will incur are tuition fees and living expenses (maintenance costs). The figures below are intended to give a rough idea of the scale of costs involved.

Tuition fees

  • For UK and EU students, fees are typically between £3,000 and £6,000 per year, with the majority of courses in the lower half of this range. Courses involving laboratory work are usually more expensive.
  • Some courses are significantly more expensive, for example, fees for MBA courses range from £18,000-£45,000.
  • Details of fees can be found in an institution’s postgraduate prospectus.

Maintenance costs

  • You should budget an average of £12,700 per year for institutions in London and the South East, and £10,500 a year elsewhere. Investigate all costs involved and calculate realistic figures.

Grants for postgraduate study do exist, and can cover both fees and living expenses but they are not automatic.
