Rachel's job log: 31

Rachel Killington has located a new flat but still needs a new job for when her work on the radio station's website comes to an end.

Work and more

Photograph: RachelI haven’t really done an awful lot in the past fortnight careerwise, but have had a lot of my time taken up socially. I’m still doing my web work (hooray!) and my 'Surprise a bride' on-air feature (hooray again!) every week, and that takes up a fair bit of my time. If I’m lucky I get some shifts with the radio station's Black Thunder team at weekends (the last one was fairly traumatic and involved me abseiling 80ft off the top of a building for Marie Curie after my colleague Richard volunteered me) and I’ve also got to try to fit in studying for my NCTJ Media Law certificate along with a bit of a social life. So cramming in four family birthdays, an anniversary, car repair, flu injection and a fairly unpleasant trip to the dentist has been almost impossible. Almost.

Careerwise I’ve picked up on my acting a little, and spent last Saturday evening in a draughty old hotel in the middle of Norfolk, playing an Egyptian Queen in a murder mystery. It was great fun (although a lot of hard work) and the guests all really enjoyed it, so hopefully it will have opened up a new avenue for me. I know that it won’t be regular work, but it’s an extra something to add to my CV if nothing else.

Waiting to move

At home things are fairly strange. My flatmate and I seem to be in some sort of limbo - my flat doesn’t officially become vacant for another few weeks yet, and I intend to stay on at my current abode as long as possible. My flatmate hasn’t got himself anywhere yet, so there are no concrete plans for either of us - I keep feeling guilty thinking that I should be doing something but at the moment there doesn’t really seem to be an awful lot that either of us can do. And Poppy (see picture), bless her, is blissfully unaware of the upheaval and stress that will surely descend upon us in the next few weeks.

Photograph: Rachel's cat PoppyIn an attempt to dispel some of my uneasiness I’ve attempted to start buying things for the new flat. So far I have equipped myself with a kettle, saucepan set, iron, hoover, a set of pink hanging monkey hooks and a frying pan for one, in the shape of a heart. The last two being completely pointless purchases I’m sure, but they were just so pretty and cute that I had to buy them!

So for me it’s another few weeks of stressing about buying ‘bottom drawer’ items, changing addresses and having enough money to survive each month. Theoretically I should be living in my new pad in a month’s time, but I’m in no way prepared for that yet - there is still far too much for me to do yet (and that’s just the things I can actually remember - there are bound to be lots more things that I haven’t even thought about!). But at least when I do eventually get sorted, I can make myself a fried egg in the shape of a heart before hanging my clothes up on a pink monkey. Awesome.
