The Faculty offers the largest concentration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in food, clothing, hospitality, tourism and related fields in the UK with over 2800 full-time, part-time and sandwich programme students.

Central to the Faculty's work is the close relationship it enjoys with the industries in which its students find employment, both in the UK and abroad.

The Faculty's postgraduate programmes are of three types - MSc, MA and Graduate Diploma. Some 50 research students are currently working on projects within the Faculty.

Department of Clothing Design & Technology

The Department is internationally known for its teaching in international fashion business, design and technology. It offers two full-time routes through its MSc Clothing programme; either MSc International Fashion Marketing or MSc Clothing Product Development. These reflect the significance of Manchester as an international centre for teaching and research in fashion-related subjects.

All staff have a relevant industrial background as well as excellent teaching profiles and many are engaged in research and consultancy work. The Department is committed to developing Knowledge Transfer Partnership schemes and has recently linked with Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited in Rochdale.

All research activities at the Department take place within the Fashion Business and Technology Research Centre at the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD). The Department of Clothing Design and Technology has a strong position in the UK, offering research in Clothing, International Fashion Marketing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, CAD/CAM and Product Development and Performance of Textiles for Clothing/Clothing Comfort.

The Department of Food and Tourism Management

The Department represents a major centre for teaching and research in its specialised areas and has an international reputation for excellence and innovation. Strong links and contacts with industry helps to ensure that courses and research projects are relevant to the needs of industry, the consumer and professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Trading Standards Qualification Council. The Department is a member of the Leading Hotel Schools of the World, a network of the world's premier hotel schools. International links also exist with the International Hotel Management Institute and the University Centre César Ritz, both in Switzerland, who offer a number of who offer a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses validated by MMU.

The Department offers ten taught postgraduate courses, three of which are new in response to industry demand - MSc International Tourism Management and eBusiness, MSc Food Management and MSc Food Marketing Management. These courses have the flexibility to offer study routes for graduates with widely different backgrounds and levels of prior industrial experience.

Applications are also welcome from graduates and final year students who wish to explore topics related to any of the industries associated with the Department's work. Research Degrees are offered in flexible format and opportunities exist for MSc by Research, MPhil, PhD and postdoctoral research.

Research and consultancy services to industry are offered by the Manchester Food Research Centre and the International Centre for Research and Consultancy for the Tourism and Hospitality Industries. Both centres run successful European Regional Development Funded projects which provide support to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. The Department also has a successful track record in delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and has recently won a KTP Partnership Award for its work with Bells of Lazonby Ltd.

Location and Facilities

The Hollings Campus is situated three miles south of Manchester city centre and is well served by public transport. Its distinctive building is a local landmark and is known as the 'toast rack'. The campus is pleasantly situated close to both Birchfields Park and Platt Fields Park, where football and hockey pitches are used by the University's teams. Hollings is a five-minute walk from the popular residential area of Fallowfield, where large numbers of students live and socialise.

The Faculty houses its own library, which has specialist collections and a well-equipped computer drop-in centre. In addition there are further computer laboratories with a range of hardware and software for students to utilise, supported by full-time technical and professional staff. There are also a range of specialist laboratories including pilot-scale food manufacturing facilities, product testing and textile testing laboratories.

Hollings has a student refectory/common area and two training restaurants, where students can also dine. Hospitality students often host themed lunches as well as important functions for external customers.

The Faculty provides short courses, conferences and on-line learning materials; courses can also be developed collaboratively with organisations to meet in-house training and development needs.

Research Programmes

Research work is well established within the Faculty and we welcome applications from graduates who wish to explore topics related to any of the industries associated with the Faculty's work. Staff are well qualified in research, with many having national and international reputations and will use their expertise in their subject area and in teaching to guide you through your research project. With over 50 academics and another 40 part-time industry-based specialists, you can be assured that your work will be relevant and focused.

(Accredited by the Trading Standards Qualification Council)

A one-year programme (two years part-time) for graduates from a variety of backgrounds who wish to enter into careers in Trading Standards. The course will provide exemptions from the professional examinations which lead to qualification as a Trading Standards Officer.

One-year full-time or two year part-time courses for graduates with a good honours degree in any discipline. Relevant professional qualifications may be considered.

International students

We welcome applications from international students. Applicants from outside of the UK should provide evidence of competence in the use of written and spoken English (e.g. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent). The Universitys International Office offers advice and support to international applicants and the Faculty provides English language support for all overseas students throughout the period of their study. This support is provided via lectures, workshop sessions in academic English and study skills, which take place in the first term. In addition to these, throughout the year, one-to-one personal tutorials are available. Facilities

Hollings Faculty

Within the Faculty there is a library which houses specialist collections and a computer drop-in centre. In addition there are a number of computer laboratories and a language laboratory with a range of hardware and software in areas such as food production, service and accommodation management. Our two training restaurants allow students to gain practical skills and experience by organising themed lunches and important functions for external customers. There is also a significant range of pilot-scale food manufacturing facilities, a taste panel suite and product testing, metrology and environmental health laboratories. The fashion studio has excellent facilities which include a computer-aided design studio, clothing engineering laboratory, fashion technology studios, textiles laboratory, clothing comfort laboratory and computer laboratory.

The University has 8 halls of residence, which provide accommodation for students in study bedrooms. Postgraduate students are welcome in all of the halls and many will endeavour to place you with other like-minded students.
