Newcastle University

Newcastle University

A University of Distinction

Newcastle University is a member of the elite Russell Group, an association of leading research-intensive UK universities. Our research and teaching have a 'real world' focus and a survey by the Higher Education Funding Council for England found that we spend more time working with businesses than any other UK university. We also work closely with communities - the University is aligned with the aims of the Make Poverty History campaign and we are committed to achieving the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals.

Our University is situated on a single-site campus and combines the best aspects of a strong campus identity with its location in the centre of a lively and cosmopolitan city.

At Newcastle our aim is simple: to inspire our students through teaching and research, and create an exciting yet supportive environment in which to study. We currently have over 4,000 postgraduate students from more than 100 countries representing a vibrant and valued part of our academic community.

The University offers a wide range of full- and part-time courses (see www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate) in a variety of subject areas including:

Taught Courses

We believe that research and teaching are inextricably linked and that teaching should be led by academics who are at the forefront of their field. The University awards a range of degrees which are not only highly invaluable for your career development, but also provide an excellent foundation for research degrees. They include Master of Arts (MA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Education (MEd), Master of Law (LLM) and Master of Science (MSc). Postgraduate Diplomas, Certificates (eg Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE)) and other qualifications are also offered. The latter are designed for various purposes, such as training for students wishing to change discipline, upgrading knowledge within a discipline, and preparing for a Master's degree programme. Research Excellence and Research Degrees

As a postgraduate student at the University you will benefit from studying within a dynamic research environment with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The University has an outstanding reputation in research across a wide range of disciplines and this was demonstrated by the publication of the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2001, which showed that the University had made one of the biggest leaps forward of all the UK universities.

Recent research and enterprise activity demonstrates clearly the University's drive to be relevant and excellent across a full range of arts, humanities, science, medicine and engineering. Projects we have been involved with recently range from pioneering stem cell research into a range of incurable diseases, to the development of a tiny electronic gadget that could help prevent rail disasters, and the discovery that the world's dialects are multiplying faster than ever before. To find out more about research news at the University please see www.ncl.ac.uk/research/news/press.htm

While a wealth of world-class, subject-based research is carried out in our 27 Schools (see www.ncl.ac.uk/about/peoplestructures/academic/allschools.htm), the University also has designated research institutes (see www.ncl.ac.uk/research/directory/atoz.htm) to faciliate multidisciplinary projects. The institutes bring together staff from different schools across the University and contract researchers, enabling them to pool their knowledge and therefore create a rich and dynamic environment for postgraduate students.

Research degrees are available at both the doctoral level (PhD, EngD, Integrated PhD, DDS, MD, professional doctorates) and Masters' (MLitt, MPhil, MMus, MRes) levels. We will support you in your studies by providing you with comprehensive training in both generic skills and competencies associated with your personal and career development, alongside specific skills needed for your research project. The University provides fully networked computer services (www.ncl.ac.uk/iss) to all students via computer clusters located throughout campus. Cluster rooms are open to all members of the University each weekday and selected clusters are open for extended hours at weekends, including one which is open 24 hours.

The INTO Newcastle University Centre offers a number of services for international students including: an English Language Testing Service; a Language Advisory Service; free English classes for international students who have met the University's English Language requirements and are registered on a degree programme, but who still need further language support (in-sessional English); a range of fee-paying English language programmes for international students who need to improve their English language skills in order to be admitted onto a degree programme at Newcastle.

The Language Centre provides the opportunity to improve your knowledge of a foreign language or to learn a new one, regardless of the subject you are studying. There are over 50 different languages to choose from, ranging from Afrikaans to Urdu, and including languages such as French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

The University also provides an excellent range of social activities through its students' Union (www.unionsociety.co.uk), and sporting facilities through the Athletic Union and the Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport (www.ncl.ac.uk/cprs).

The City

Described as, 'England's premier arts and nightlife destination' by The Rough Guide to Britain, 2006, Newcastle is one of the most exciting, friendly and cosmopolitan cities in the UK. www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/newcastle

The city of Newcastle is remarkable for its mix of old and new. The Norman castle, medieval cathedral and impressive nineteenth-century buildings are reminders of the city's rich history, whilst a number of modern, innovative landmarks have come to represent its energetic rejuvenation. One of the most striking of these is Anthony Gormley's 20-metre high 'Angel of the North' welcoming visitors to the North East of England. The famous Tyne Bridge and award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge cross the river Tyne, connecting the city of Newcastle to the newly developed Gateshead Quays, which boasts the BALTIC art gallery and the magnificent Sage Gateshead music centre.

Accommodation to Suit All

We have a wide range of affordable University accommodation and can also help you find private accommodation, much of which is located close to the campus and city-centre amenities. For more information see www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/accommodation
