Advertising, marketing and PR: Opportunities abroad

search for » job vacancies in advertising, marketing and PR

Huge, multinational marketing groups own many large agencies and PR consultancies. Many brands are marketed all over the world. International campaigns will be appropriate for major clients. Advertising and marketing in different countries can be challenging. It is essential to understand the culture of a country, as what works in one country will not necessarily work in another. Successful campaigns usually have certain consistencies throughout but will be tailored to each individual country.

The amount of contact you have with overseas clients and opportunities to work abroad will largely depend on the company or organisation that employs you. Some of the large international organisations will have offices throughout the world. For example, Saatchi & Saatchi has a network of 153 offices in 83 countries and employs 7,000 people, while TBWA\global has a network of 291 offices in 77 countries and approximately 9,700 employees.

What are my chances of working abroad?

Although advertising, marketing and PR are all international industries, the advent of new technology such as email and video-conferencing means global communication is instant. This, in turn, perhaps lessens the need for travel.

Most graduate entrants start their careers in the UK and the majority will remain here for most of their career. Depending on whom you work for, there may be a possibility of secondments overseas and, perhaps at senior level, the chance to set up a new office.

To work in advertising and marketing in another country, you would need to understand the culture of that country, be knowledgeable of the local markets and have the necessary language skills.

It is a similar scenario if you chose to work for a PR consultancy in another country, as you would require appropriate language skills, an understanding of the media of the country and its culture.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)'s formal qualifications are recognised throughout the world, therefore helping you to seek career opportunities abroad.
