Working abroad: Emigration

search for: job vacancies abroad

When emigrating to another country there are many issues, apart from work, to consider.

Culture shock

While working overseas may be very exciting and can broaden your horizons tremendously, most people experience difficulties, at least initially, with adjusting to living and working in a foreign country. What is commonly described as ‘culture shock’ can be particularly acute for those travelling to countries which are very different from the UK culturally or for people who have not done much overseas travel before.

Surrounding community

It might be worth finding out whether there is a significant organised expat community in the area you are travelling to. When you first arrive, spending time with other expats might help you feel more comfortable and less homesick. But in the longer term you may find you feel more settled and have a richer cultural experience if you try to integrate more closely with the general population.

Seeking out clubs and societies to join could be a good way to meet people and make friends in your area.

Family impact

Depending on your own personal situation, you may need to consider the impact your move abroad will have on family. It may be important to work out how you will be able to keep in contact and how feasible it will be to arrange visits in both directions. If you are working in Europe this may be relatively easy, but if, for instance, you are in Australia, you may need to be realistic about perhaps only seeing your family once or twice a year.
