Our field can be seen as an engineering discipline, and that is how we teach it at Aberystwyth. Engineering is about applying scientific principles, and your ingenuity, to achieving the best possible solution to a problem. It is a creative activity because it seeks solutions that are elegant as well as functional and re-usable. It is also about being systematic and professional so that others can have confidence that your solution is a strong one that will work consistently and reliably.

The products that are built by software engineers become part of a system that includes human users and their organisations, with their own social, financial and legal features. We have to understand these organisations and work with them. Our courses place a strong emphasis on professional and personal development within the broad context of the business world. The advent of the Internet has led to a demand for new kinds of software solutions that are suitable for this emerging and rapidly changing arena.

The Computer Science department at Aberystwyth is long established but continues to move with the times. There are currently 60 teaching, research and support staff and about 450 undergraduate students. We have close links with other departments in and beyond Aberystwyth and strong collaboration with industry. Our graduates and industrial year students are eagerly sought by employers.

The Department is rated one of the best in the UK. With a Student Satisfaction rating of 96% Computer Science at Aberystwyth ranked top equal in the UK in the 2010 National Student Survey. For teaching and research we were rated as one of the top Computer Science departments in the UK, according to the Times - Good University Guide.

Research

The Department of Computer Science at Aberystwyth is the best in Wales for Computer Science and one of the UK's premier university departments in this field according to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The Department is the only one in Wales that has been awarded a quality profile with 100% research being of international quality.

The Department of Computer Science has a vibrant team of research workers including: lecturing staff, research staff, and research students. The research of the Department is organised within research groups. All groups investigate and develop techniques and applications of intelligent systems where we actively encourage close inter-group working, giving a high degree of coherence to the Department's research.

Taught MSc Courses

The Department of Computer Science at Aberystwyth has a strong research focus on techniques and applications of intelligent systems, working with many major companies. Our taught Masters degrees are designed to meet the needs of both students wanting a foundation for a career in research, and those wanting to expand on their skills to accelerate their industrial career.

Remote Sensing and Computer Science - New for 2011

The MSc in Remote Sensing and Computer Science is designed to provide you with a range of key skills and expertise required to understand, analyse and interpret Remote Sensing and other spatial datasets. You will then explore and develop applications to solve representative real world problems.

This is a highly interdisciplinary Masters course with a strong vocational dimension, incorporating field-based and work experience modules that link the latest theoretical concepts with real applications.

MRes 3D Imaging, Analysis and Applications

This course studies the key technologies needed to capture the 3D data about objects of interest, and analyse and understand the captured data. The course takes a practical approach based on real world problems, with each module being based on a practical work, culminating in a large individual project.

As well as providing a grounding in essential research and study skills, the taught course addresses techniques in 3D Imaging and sets the context for how 3D Imaging and Analysis is used the world today.

MSc Computer Science (Software Engineering)

A large proportion of software developed today is distributed in nature, where parts of an application system are partitioned across multiple computers each interacting to solve some problem in a distributed fashion. This MSc course aims to provide an intensive programme of study in Software Engineering that covers the principles of distributed systems and their implementation and use on the Internet.

This MSc is suitable for students wishing to increase their Software Engineering experience in preparation for a career in the software industry, and is a qualifying Masters Degree for Chartered Engineer status. It can also be an appropriate degree for those wishing to pursue a research career.

MSc in Intelligent Autonomous Systems

This degree links to the research of three of our research groups:

  • Advanced Reasoning
  • Computational Biology
  • Intelligent Robotics

It gives students broad experience of Artificial Intelligence of Autonomous Systems, and good training for further research. This knowledge is then applied in the field of intelligent autonomous systems, where applications range from controlling mobile robots, to diagnosing problems on spacecraft, to intelligent, information-gathering web-bots.

MSc Intelligent Systems

This course provides broad coverage of Intelligent systems, with emphasis on the areas addressed by the Computer Science research groups: Advanced Reasoning, Computational Biology, Intelligent Robotics, Vision, Graphics and Visualization.

The course is both cutting-edge and practical, containing a mix of work geared towards building intelligent systems, rather than simply knowing about them. Course content includes modules on

  • Adaptive Behaviour
  • Representation and Reasoning
  • Machine Learning
  • Applied Intelligent Systems

Research Degrees

The Department offers both 3-year PhD and 2-year MPhil research degrees. These programmes involve individual research on a topic agreed by the student and the Department. Each research student conducts research under the guidance of a staff member as the student's principal supervisor and another as the second supervisor. Research degrees are awarded on the basis of a thesis and oral examination.
