Register now at www.bcu.ac.uk/pgevents Our contribution to the education of the citizens of Birmingham and beyond stretches back through a succession of predecessor institutions for over 160 years. We achieved university status in 1992 as the University of Central England, changing our name to Birmingham City University in 2007, reflecting our commitment to, and pride in, our home city.
The Faculty of Health is the largest faculty within Birmingham City University, with over 7,000 full- and part-time students. We are proud to be the leading provider of qualified staff to the NHS and social care providers in the region: and the only centre in the West Midlands to offer courses in Speech and Language Therapy, Diagnostic Radiography and Radiotherapy. Excellent employment ratesOur graduate employment rates are outstanding. In 2009, 100 per cent of postgraduate students from the Faculty's School of Health and Social Care went into employment or further study within six months of graduation (according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2008/09). Among these postgraduate leavers, the average salary for those in full-time employment was £39,800: and the highest salary was £48,000. These results are due, in part, to our commitment to 'learning by doing': our students are practice-ready because they spend up to 50 per cent of their time on placement and enjoy practical, hands-on learning on campus, often using the latest virtual learning techniques. Outstanding student supportOur faculty offers flexible part-time study options, an affordable nursery on campus and a Personal Development Department, which offers students help and advice.
Leading facilitiesOur leafy City South Campus, in Edgbaston, boasts state-of-the-art learning and teaching facilities within the £30 million Seacole Building. The campus is served by excellent transport links and is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre. Our purpose-built facilities include several mock environments for teaching: including replica hospital wards, a model operating theatre and a 'bedroom' and 'kitchen' for students training to practice in the community. We also offer a Radiography Suite, which uses the Oncentra Master Plan radiotherapy planning system, an immersive Virtual Environment Radiotherapy Training (VERT) suite, an Ultrasim ultrasound training simulator, a dedicated Picture Archiving and Communication System(PACS) suite and a Xograph X-ray imaging suite. Please visit our website for a virtual tour. Cutting-edge researchOur teaching benefits from the high quality research which takes place in the faculty: together with partner organisations, we're investigating the educational development of students and practitioners and translating laboratory-based medical science into applied patient care.
Our four schoolsThe Faculty of Health is made up of four schools. School of Nursing and MidwiferyThe School of Nursing and Midwifery boasts exceptional student satisfaction rates and outstanding graduate employment statistics. School of Health and Social CareThe School of Health and Social Care offers courses in Health Sciences, Operating Department Practice, Paramedic Science, Public Health, Radiography, Radiotherapy, Rehabilitation Work, Social Work and Speech and Language Therapy. The school offers some of the most up-to-date learning facilities in the UK: including a digital X-ray imaging suite, a 3D virtual reality suite and computerised dummy 'patients'. School of Professional PracticeThe School of Professional Practice helps students on all our courses, and on placement, to develop their professional knowledge and skills. The support the school offers, in partnership with employers such as NHS Trusts, is one of the key reasons why our graduates achieve such high employment rates. Defence School of Health Care StudiesWorking with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, the Defence School of Health Care Studies is the sole provider of pre-registration education in nursing, operating department practice and radiography for the Defence Medical Services in the UK.
