Photo of Brunel graduatesThe School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics comprises two of the UK's highly-rated departments - Information Systems & Computing, and Mathematical Sciences, and has a large and thriving postgraduate student population of over 360 students.

The School achieved excellent results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise: The Department of Information Systems and Computing is ranked top in the country in its area in terms of 'Research Power', while almost 60% of the research in the Mathematical Sciences Department has been rated 'World-Leading' or 'Internationally Excellent'.

Since its foundation over 40 years ago, Brunel has always built strong relationships with business and industry both at home and overseas. This strength is one of the ways in which we enhance the employability of our graduates. We have excellent links with business and we ensure that the latest developments in the commercial world feed into all our courses.

Real world applications

Our students have opportunities to apply their learning to real world outcomes, and on one of our courses, MSc in Business Systems Integration (with SAP Technology), students gain hands-on experience of SAP technology and the opportunity to take a recognised SAP TERP 10 industry qualification. In fact, this year, SAP Analytics Services, in cooperation with UNICEF, ran an Analytics Dashboard competition for University Alliance partners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).  The focus of the exercise was that of providing UNICEF with a greater degree of insight on their donors.

We entered a team of students and were delighted when we were ranked second out of  twenty-eight teams entered from across EMEA. See here for more information about the competition.

Another special feature of our Computing courses in the department is the opportunity for our students to carry out an Industrial Dissertation Programme (IDP). They carry out their dissertations in collaboration with companies, thereby enhancing the skills and knowledge acquired during the course. The IDP gives our students the opportunity to apply state-of-the-art technology to a real-world situation and is an ideal environment in which to complete their dissertation.

Opportunities to learn from Business and Industry

Brunel prides itself on preparing our graduates with all the skills and information they need to compete for the jobs they want. We have excellent links with business and we ensure that the latest developments in the commercial world feed into all our courses. As part of this process, we invite colleagues from industry to come and teach on some of our modules. This gives our students an invaluable insight into the real world and makes the courses more enjoyable too.

Our industrial colleagues bring the knowledge of day-to-day commercial practice to bear on the subject they are teaching. They help students to see how the theory learned from lectures and reading, and the experience developed from completing coursework, is applied in practice. This enhances, and contextualises the academic work, and helps students to prepare for the workplace.

What two of our past students have to say about studying at Brunel ...

"I am very pleased with the results of the RAE 2008 and warmly congratulate academic staff on their achievements. The hard work involved in the preparation of submissions has borne fruit. The outstanding success of several of our departments confirms the high quality and impact of their research."

"My career aspiration to work as an SAP consultant, coupled with my interest to further my academic studies drove me to do this course.

Brunel's close proximity to London and easy transport links helped me to decide this was the right place to study. The university itself is very large and it is very rare to find a university in London with such a large campus on one site.
I found the course content and teaching approach very informative and highly enjoyable. The course was well structured and the department was very helpful. I especially enjoyed the group project modules, which involved working in teams.
I definitely believe studying for an MSc at Brunel has helped me get to where I am today. Since graduating in 2009, I joined Accenture straight away and have been working here for over two years. I have primarily beeninvolved in global SAP projects within the energy sector. This has involved a lot of travel, allowing me to visit places within the UK as well as abroad (The United States, Dubai, and Qatar)."

Mustafa Amin Syed
Mustafa studied for an MSc in Business Systems Integration (using SAP Technology) and is now working as a SAP Tax Consultant at Accenture.

"I own the end to end Software Release Process using Agile Development/Testing methodology. I plan, co-ordinate and lead the release by pulling together various streams and stakeholders to deploy new functionality to customers.

My current client is Vodafone UK who I have supported for three years since I finished my MSc degree.

I always wanted to go to Brunel for my undergraduate degree, but just missed out on a place. I felt having an MSc from Brunel would differentiate me from many of the other graduates applying for a small number of graduate programmes.

The MSc in Information Systems Management has given me a greater understanding of IT and management fields which made me an attractive candidate to employers. I gained transferable skills in presentation, team working and communication. I also developed skills in critical thinking which enables me to add value in thought leadership and innovation.

I found the course to be varied and each module had specific objectives which gave us a broad understanding of Information Systems, people, process and technology. I really enjoyed the workshops, especially with SAP, where we got to put into practice what we were exposed to using SAP and Business Warehouse.

My greatest achievement was to tackle the dissertation and take part in the SAP TERP10 certification course at the same time via Brunel. I managed to do something that was daunting and get training on SAP which is a professional qualification. To this day I still get emails from recruiters who desperately need staff with experience using SAP.

It was brilliant to be able to work with students from nearly every continent. One of the highlights of my time was meeting so many people of different cultures with mutual interests.

I would recommend Brunel and have done so on multiple occasions because it was a culture where we could develop our knowledge and experience. Every opinion was valid and people invested time in each other to develop mutual understanding. The School has very high standards and Brunel is great for employment opportunities."

Akbar Mahomed
Akbar studied for an MSc in Information Systems Management and is currently working as Release Manager for Hewlett Packard.
