It has a long record of excellence in teaching across a wide range of courses, several of which have links with major employers including the BBC and Confetti Studios. Research successes are testament to the dedication of all Technology's researchers to break barriers across mechanical and manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, process engineering, biomedical engineering and microelectronics. The faculty currently has more than 160 research degree students supported by excellent research laboratories and studios. Academic strengths
Technology at DMU:
CoursesTechnology at DMU offers a diverse range of postgraduate courses across the areas of computing, engineering and media technology, offering students the chance to benefit from high-quality teaching based on up-to-the-minute research findings. DMU is one of only a few UK universities to offer an optional placement year for all Master's degrees in Technology, giving postgraduates a valuable opportunity to gain real-world industry experience as part of their course. Technology offers a range of part-time courses, combined with flexible services such as e-learning, to assist the study of those who have professional or personal commitments. All postgraduate courses in Technology are designed to prepare students to excel in principles, practice, tools and techniques using industry standard facilities with some courses developed in conjunction with industry leaders. Full-time courses
Career opportunitiesTechnology postgraduates are extremely successful and recognised by local and national organisations. They work for industry leaders such as Ford, Rolls-Royce and Panasonic, earning on average £32,714.* Andrea Tallis, a PhD student, won the 2008 East Midlands Engineering and Science Professional Master's prize for her work on bio-ceramic process to treat bone defects. And PhD student Martin Rhodes, along with Simon Coupland, won the British Computer Society's 2008 Machine Intelligence Competition for their Darwinian-influenced software designed to make players in football video games more intelligent. “I learnt the fundamentals of sophisticated artificially intelligent software which supports today's financial industry.” *Source: HESA Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2007/8 (figures for six months after graduation). Facilities
Technology at DMU is dedicated to providing the most up-to-date facilities and equipment for all postgraduate students. It provides state-of-the-art laboratories and workspaces supported by highly-trained technical staff. These are continually updated and evolve with developing industrial and creative trends. DMU has invested heavily in the new Creative Technology Studios (CTS) that were officially opened in 2008 by Aziz Rashid, Head of Regional and Local Programmes, BBC East Midlands. The Creative Technology Studios have enhanced Technology's position as a leader in providing cutting-edge teaching in media and technology. Located in the Innovation Centre, the Rapid Product Development and Manufacturing facilities at DMU are among the best in the UK. There are an extensive range of machines capable of producing prototype and production parts, specialised CAD/CAM software, contact and non-contact scanning reverse engineering equipment, plus material test equipment to underpin our teaching and research. Emerging Technologies Research Centre (EMTERC) facilities are grouped into five laboratory areas situated in the Hawthorn and Queens buildings. DMU campus
DMU has invested more than £186.5 million in its campus buildings, facilities and surroundings in the last 10 years. This investment has ensured the university will continue to offer sector-leading facilities and an education that is modern, innovative and state-of-the-art. Just like the university, Leicester is vibrant and multicultural, celebrating the foods, fashions and faiths of its diverse population. The university's central location makes it the ideal base for students from across the UK, with excellent transport links to the rest of the country. DMU is a modern, dynamic and welcoming University with an excellent reputation for teaching. From students and support staff to academics and alumni, DMU is a place where people are internationally recognised for their achievements. Students benefit from DMU's ambitious and innovative approach to Higher Education, which for more than 100 years, has enabled the university to break barriers in research and build firm links with business. AccommodationDMU postgraduate students live in privately rented accommodation, within easy reach of the university campus. The university's Housing Office is available to help students source accommodation and advice on contracts and tenancy agreements. In September, the Housing Office hosts house-hunting information events where postgraduates can meet other students looking for privately-rented accommodation. Apply nowPostgraduate applications can be made through UKPASS,the postgraduate equivalent of UCAS and gives students a simple and efficient way to apply online.
