The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University is strongly oriented towards research and advanced postgraduate studies. Our reputation for research in the mathematical and computer sciences is internationally recognised and we provide advanced learning in the core skills required for science, technology and industry. With strong links to industry, both locally and internationally, we offer excellent pathways into the many fascinating careers open to mathematics and computer science specialists and we are at the forefront of education in these fundamentally important disciplines. External partnerships also play an important role in the School's ongoing success. These include the Royal Society, World-wide Actuarial Profession, British Computer Society, British Council, Engineering Council, Department of Trade and Industry and many UK and international research funding bodies. Our School consists of the departments of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics, within which we offer a wide variety of taught programmes and an array of relevant and innovative research options. Actuarial Mathematics and StatisticsOur Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics department forms a major part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, which brings together the research and postgraduate activities in mathematics and statistics at Heriot-Watt and the University of Edinburgh, offering a unique environment able to attract and foster the very best talent from around the world. Our Actuarial Science programmes are designed to progress students through the examinations of the UK Actuarial Profession's education strategy and significantly reduce the time taken to qualify as an actuarial fellow. Our MSc in Actuarial Science covers the earlier (CT) stages of these examinations and our MSc in Actuarial Management the later (CA and ST) subjects. Our MSc in Quantitative Financial Risk Management is designed to address the demand in the financial services industry for advanced financial risk management and our new MSc in Quantitative Financial Engineering will equip students with the practical skills required by the modern investment and asset management industry where relative value trading strategies and structuring dominate. Finally, our MSc in Financial Mathematics is an advanced mathematics degree offered jointly with the University of Edinburgh. Taught Programmes

These research interests inform our postgraduate teaching over a range of one year MSc programmes. AI and Software Engineering are advanced MScs exclusively for Computer Science graduates. Other MScs like Computational Biology and IT (Business) are interdisciplinary addressing overlaps with other topical subject areas. A few, like Computing and IT (Software Systems), are generalist MScs, while the remainder are specialist MScs addressing hot issues in modern software engineering. All our advanced and specialist MScs are accredited by the British Computer Society. Taught Programmes
www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/macs/compsci/courses/ MathematicsOur Mathematics department forms a major part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences and is one of the two founder members of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) which hosts regular high-level international meetings into all aspects of the mathematical sciences. We obtained top research ratings in the last two UK Research Assessment Exercises. The quality and range of research is excellent, encompassing mathematical biology, medicine and ecology, computational applied mathematics, theoretical aspects of differential equations and dynamical systems, mathematical physics, spectral theory, algebra and topology. Such strength and depth is epitomised by the high levels of external research funding coming into the department. Links with business and industry are crucially important, both as a means for students to gain hands on experience of real-world problems, and as a gateway into employment. Collaborations such as those with Edinburgh Petroleum Services and Concept Systems Ltd, have won international awards. Taught Programmes
