Photo: Speech & Language therapistsThe Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care at Manchester Metropolitan University has over 2,500 students studying a wide portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes. The programmes cover a diverse range of academic disciplines within the caring and enabling professions, including psychology, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, acupuncture, social care, social work, nursing and other health-related subjects.

Our portfolio of courses has been designed in partnership with industry professionals and is accredited by professional and regulatory bodies. Our postgraduate programmes are supported by the vibrant and successful Research Institute for Health & Social Change (RIHSC) which brings together an impressive array of research, spanning developments in health and social care, professional practice development and evaluation, processes and experiences of social inclusion, policy development and social change, and critical theoretical social research.

Our programmes prepare students for their future professional lives and gain added depth to their student experience through multi-professional links across the various subject disciplines, which mirror those which our graduates will experience in their future employment.

Employability

Given the applied and vocational nature of many of our programmes, our graduates have some of the highest employment rated in the UK. Over 80% of our trained Health professionals including nurses, health visitors, speech and language therapists, health scientists and dental technicians go on to work in the North West This reflects our commitment to our partnership work with external agencies and organizations, and in providing work placements as part of many of our programmes of study.

We think the best people to ask about our courses are our students. Our courses have some of the highest student satisfaction rates in the UK National Student Survey. We pride ourselves on the quality of our courses, the quality of our teaching and the quality of the professionals that graduate from our faculty every year.

Facilities

We have several state of the art professional and clinical areas for our students to implement their learning, enhance their skills and gain experience of working in a realistic professional environment.

Our psychology students have the use of laboratories which are inclusive of a Social and Developmental Observation Laboratory, a suite of psychology testing rooms which can be used for experimental work, a psychophysiology lab and a parapsychology lab.

We have the largest school of Physiotherapy of its kind in the UK and are recognised internationally in this field of study. Students benefit from the use of a specialist speech therapy centre which has a wide range of high technology equipment for speech analysis and augmentative and alternative communication, as well a suite of fully equipped practice rooms and clinical areas.

The Faculty is due to move to our new £139 million Birley Fields campus in 2014, this new super campus will provide a unique modern, learning environment with investments in the latest technology and advancements to ensure that our learning experience is second to none. It will unite provision for teachers, nurses, psychologists, health and social workers and has been designed as one of the most environmentally sustainable campuses in the UK.
