The Hollings Faculty offers the largest concentration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in food, clothing, hospitality, tourism and related fields in the UK with over 3,500 full and part time programme students. Hollings has established numerous links with educational institutions and companies in Europe, the USA and Asia. This means we know how to help our students prepare to compete in the global job market. We take particular pride in our close relationship with the industries associated with the Faculty's taught programmes. This ensures vocational relevance and enhanced career opportunities so that the employment record for our graduates is kept extremely strong. The Faculty offers taught and 'by research' postgraduate programmes, opportunities exist for MSc, MSc by research, MPhil, PhD and Post Doctoral research. Some 50 research students are currently working on projects within the Faculty. There are two departments that make up the faculty The Department of Clothing Design and Technology and The Department of Food and Tourism Management. Department of Clothing Design & TechnologyThe Department has an international reputation as a leader in clothing design and technology and offers three taught Masters programmes that can be studied on a full or part-time basis.
The majority of our teaching and technical staff have a background in industry as well as excellent teaching profiles and many are engaged in research and consultancy work. The Department is committed to developing Knowledge Transfer Partnership schemes and we have most recently linked with Try and Lilly Ltd through the scheme. All research activities at the Department take place within the Fashion Technology Research Centre, a centre of the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD). The Department of Clothing Design and Technology has a strong position in the UK, offering research in Clothing, International Fashion Marketing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and Product Development and Performance of Textiles for Clothing/Clothing Comfort. Taught postgraduate coursesThese courses are available to study on a full time basis for one year or on a part time basis which typically takes three years, but students do have the option of spreading their studies over five years. The Department of Food and Tourism ManagementThe Department is a major centre for teaching and research in its specialised areas and has an international reputation for excellence and innovation. Strong links and contacts with industry helps to ensure that courses and research projects are relevant to the needs of industry.
International links also exist with the International Hotel Management Institute and the University Centre César Ritz, both in Switzerland, who offer a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses validated by MMU. The Department offers taught postgraduate courses which have been designed in response to industry demand. These courses have the flexibility to offer study routes for graduates with a range of backgrounds and levels of prior industrial experience. Applications are also welcome from graduates and final year students who wish to explore topics related to any of the industries associated with the Department's work. Post Graduate Degrees are offered in flexible format and opportunities exist for MSc by Research, MPhil, PhD and postdoctoral research. Research and consultancy services to industry are offered by the Manchester Food Research Centre and the International Centre for Research and Consultancy for the Tourism and Hospitality Industries. Both centres run successful projects which provide support to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. The Department also has a successful track record in delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and has recently won a KTP Partnership Award for its work with Bells of Lazonby Ltd. This course is accredited by the Trading Standards Institute and is aimed at graduates from a variety of backgrounds who wish to enter into careers in Trading Standards. The course will provide exemptions from the professional examinations which lead to qualification as a Trading Standards Officer

The Hollings Campus is situated three miles south of Manchester city centre and is well served by public transport. Its distinctive, grade two listed building is a landmark and is known as the 'toast rack'. The campus is pleasantly situated close to both Birchfields and Platt Fields Parks, where football and hockey pitches are used by the University's teams. Hollings is a five-minute walk from the popular residential area of Fallowfield, where large numbers of students live and socialise. Short coursesThe Open Professional Programme has been designed to meet the demands of employers and employees. It has been developed for a bite-sized approach to teaching, alongside work-based learning. Individuals on industry focussed short courses can accrue credit over time. The programme provides a new progression route for learners employed in the fashion and clothing industry.

Applicants from outside of the UK should provide evidence of competence in the use of written and spoken English (e.g. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent). The University's International Office offers advice and support to international applicants and the Faculty provides English language support for all overseas students throughout the period of their study. This support is provided via lectures, workshop sessions in academic English and study skills, which take place in the first term. Hollings has its own library which houses specialist collections of print and online materials. The library is also home to a computer drop-in centre that offers printing and scanning facilities. Specialist software available includes Macromedia, Frontpage, SPSS, and applications in the areas of food production, service and accommodation management. In addition there are further computer laboratories with a range of hardware and software for students to utilise, supported by full-time technical and professional staff. Every subject taught is comprehensively covered with a total of more than 800,000 books across the University. You'll be able to come and browse or you can always access our electronic libraries from the comfort of your own computer. Social spacesHollings has lots of areas for you to socialise or meet your course colleagues to carry out group work, including the café, the student's social learning space and the refectory which offers a discount for students. We also have a range of specialist equipment used for teaching on our courses. Trading StandardsThe Trading Standards course is taught with the aid of our specialist, industry standard equipment that complements the theory that you learn over the duration of your time with us. The Department of Food and Tourism Management has its own dedicated metrology laboratory full of equipment used for testing the accuracy of weights and measures. We have a wide range of counterfeit goods enabling you to gain practical experience of the regulations around Intellectual Property and also the potential dangers to consumers if they purchase counterfeit electrical equipment, toys etc. HospitalityThe Faculty has two dedicated training restaurants that are open to students, staff and members of the public in which you will develop your food and beverage management skills in a real environment serving real customers. You will use the restaurant and kitchens to deliver your own live project themed around a style of service/cuisine of your choice. You will plan and manage the whole event, including developing the menu, organising the staffing of the restaurant, training your staff, market the restaurant and cost the entire event Food and nutritionThe Faculty has a significant range of pilot-scale food manufacturing facilities and laboratories including a taste panel suite and product testing, product development and chemistry/microbiology laboratories. The Department has a dedicated clothing Technical Services team who are on hand to help you providing support guidance and advice when you need it. The technical team have all worked within the clothing and fashion industry and so have great practical experience for you to draw on. AccommodationThe University has 8 halls of residence, which provide accommodation for students in study bedrooms. Postgraduate students are welcome in all of the halls and many will endeavour to place you with other like-minded students.
