Research is the foundation for excellence throughout our activities as confirmed by our results in the RAE 2008; Our history team is renowned as one of the most dynamic in the country, with 65% of its research rated as either world class or world leading. The friendly and supportive environment established by the team enables each student to maximise their individual academic potential. The team specialises in modern, early modern, and social history.

Unrivalled support

In addition to the guidance, support and training you will receive from your course leader, Academic Advisor and other technical and support staff, our Student Support Co-ordinators offer advice on your course, finance, accommodation or personal issues. They will also regularly update you with information on visiting speakers, careers advice and course announcements.

The Department of History, Philosophy and Religion is located over two campuses: Headington (History) and Harcourt Hill (Philosophy and Religion), both close to the centre of Oxford.

Our master's courses provide an excellent grounding for those wishing to go on to do a research degree.

Research degrees

We have a thriving community of students undertaking research degrees. Supervision covers a wide range of areas relating to: philosophy; religion and theology; history; history of art; and communication, media and culture. These opportunities enable students to explore their own interests in depth while benefiting from the facilities, training, research seminars and support offered to all postgraduate students in the university. All courses are led by dedicated and enthusiastic experts in their fields at the forefront of contemporary research.

Entry requirements

Normally an upper second-class (2.1) honours degree in a related discipline for the MA History and MA History of Medicine.

English language requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should hold one of the following qualifications:

  • British Council (IELTS) Test: band 7 overall with at least 6 in each band
  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based) or 100 (internet-based)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency: grade C or above
  • NEAB University Test in English for Speakers of Other Languages: Pass
  • JMB Test in English for Overseas Students: grade 1,2 or 3
