The University of Manchester |
OverviewBy choosing to study here in Manchester you will be joining one of the most innovative and successful Schools of Computer Science in the world. Manchester saw the birth of Computer Science, with the creation of the worlds first stored program computer (in 1948), and has contributed over the years to some of the disciplines most exciting and important innovations. We continue to work on pioneering research including cutting edge image processing software used in Hollywood films, new technologies to exploit the power of the web, medical imaging software, low power chip design, new brain-like computer architectures, and much more. These world-class research activities inform the content of our postgraduate programmes, enabling our students to work with leading-edge technologies and staff of international renown
The value of a Manchester Computer Science postgraduate degree is further reinforced through our links with other disciplines, with advances in Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Business and Management, and Life Sciences becoming increasingly dependent on the skills of computer scientists. The School has forged close ties with industry and employers from larger multinationals such as EA Games, IBM and Microsoft to small local organisations actively seek out our students for projects, sponsorships, placements and graduate jobs. Both of these factors enable our graduates to secure top jobs in virtually every sector of industry; commerce, public service, and academia. 2010/11 New MSc Programme LaunchThe School of Computer Science is pleased to anounced the launch of a new suite of cutting edge advanced computing programmes that will run for the first time from September 2010. The programmes and associated pathways allow specialisation in the disciplines latest and most important application areas and technologies. They represent the latest in a long line of innovations to MSc teaching here in Manchester. The new MSc programmes here in Manchester are unique in the sense that our size and research strength has enabled us to offer a greater combination of breadth, depth and flexibility than any other UK Computer Science department. Students have complete freedom to shape their own programmes by choosing from a wide spectrum of computer science and interdisciplinary topics. Furthermore, students opting for the Advanced Computer Science programme can either opt to follow the standard programme or to flavour their MSc by choosing a particular pathway. Pathways enable students to graduate from the long established and highly respected ACS programme, but with a specialism that reflects their interests and career aspirations. Our programmes and pathways we offer our listed below.

Further information on our new MSc programme launch is available here: FundingThe School offers a number of Kilburn Scholarships, in memory of Tom Kilburn, who in 1948 designed and built the world's first stored program computer here in Manchester. They are awarded on academic merit to students who have applied for a MSc programme and that we believe have the skills and aptitude to help the help the School build on Kilburn's legacy of achievement and innovation. There are a number of funding opportunities also available to Postgraduate Research students, both internally and externally. More detailed information about the schemes and studentships available can be found on the website. Research programmesThere are three forms of research degrees:
Computer Science research at Manchester is structured around themes; lightweight and adaptable groupings of research topics that target today’s most important and pressing computing challenges. Core themes support our aspiration to understand and develop complete systems. Interdisciplinary themes support our ambition to grow research at the interface with other disciplines. Few universities in the world are able to offer the same breadth of expertise. Research groups
As a research student you will become a fully integrated member of the research community within the School through regular contact with your supervisor and advisor and with other researchers within your area. For those new to research, the School provides a programme of taught courses on topics such as research methods, research planning and thesis writing: For details on how to apply for one of our research courses click here.
