Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) PrimaryThe PGCE is a full time programme which will prepare you to teach in the 5 to 11 year age range incorporating the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The PGCE integrates placement based learning centrally throughout all elements of the programme which is delivered by a partnership between the University and 150 primary schools. The PGCE is 38 weeks in duration, over half of which will be spent in partnership schools in the North West. The PGCE offers a specialism in Modern Languages and trainees, if appropriately qualified, may be offered the opportunity to study French, German or Spanish. A strong commitment to equal opportunities and inclusiveness pervades every aspect of the programme, which attracts a large number of very able trainees of diverse backgrounds, cultures, ages, experiences and knowledge and skill bases. Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) SecondaryPGCE secondary training is offered in the following subjects.
The course takes place in the context of a professional partnership between the School of Education and a variety of schools and colleges. This partnership ensures a high quality of training is maintained. You will spend two thirds of the PGCE course on placement and one third of your time with high quality tutors on University based activities. Whilst in the University you will work in subject specific groups under the guidance of a specialist tutor who has substantial relevant teaching experience. Constantly in touch with current educational practice your tutors are often recognised as leaders in their field and contributing to research, policy and curriculum developments in your subject. MA Education
The course is aimed at well qualified graduates either new to or in their early years in the teaching profession. For teachers in possession of QTS/PGCE it offers the opportunity to engage on a part-time basis in continuing professional development. This is in relation to their role as classroom teachers and/or in preparation for roles of additional responsibility and leadership. The course is strongly focused upon the application of educational theories, ideas and concepts to young people in classroom, school and community based contexts. It offers a unique combination of pedagogical, policy and practice based perspectives on education located within the educational and professional experiences of the participants. Further information MA Education MSc Educational ResearchThis course aims to prepare students to carry out and evaluate educational research in a critical and self-critical manner. Students are encouraged to develop analytical and thinking skills in relation to the different philosophical approaches to research. It supports the acquisition of cognitive, practical and transferable skills relevant to research and practice in the UK and overseas, and enables the development of skills necessary for employment as an educational researcher or as a practitioner researcher employed in education. It is aimed primarily at those wishing to conduct educational research either full-time or as part of their professional role and those wishing to continue onto doctoral research. The course is composed of compulsory and optional course units. The compulsory units include: Planning of Research; Critical Reading and Writing; Introduction to Quantitative and Qualitative Methods; and Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis Techniques. Typical optional units include topics such as Researching Disability; Discourse Analysis; Test Development and Action Research. The tutors on the MSc are actively engaged in research and will draw on their experience wherever appropriate on the course. The training offered in this course enables development in a number of careers. Typically, people taking the MSc go onto doctoral research, a career in academic research or used the qualification to enhance their practice in a non-academic setting. Our Research and Graduate School hosts one of the largest graduate education research communities in the UK and our PGCE programme has a long tradition as a centre of excellence and is consistently regarded to be one of the top ten teacher training institutions nationally.
PGCE trainees who successfully complete the PGCE (with QTS) can be awarded up to a maximum of 60 M Level credits and towards a Master of Art in Education which will take a further two or three years of part time study at the University.
