The University of Manchester
School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures

The University of Manchester

Photo The University of Manchester is Britain's largest single-site university with a proud history of achievement and an ambitious agenda for the future. The University has an exceptional record of generating and sharing new ideas, and the quality, breadth and volume of its research activity is unparalleled in the UK.

School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures

The School comprises some 85 academic staff, 14 postdoctoral researchers, and 70 language-teaching and administrative staff. We view languages such as English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish less as European Languages than as languages of European origin spoken in many parts of the world, alongside our other languages, including Arabic, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Turkish, Hebrew and Persian.

The School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (SLLC) achieved an outstanding result in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. Our submissions in Iberian and Latin American Languages and in Russian, Slavonic and East European Languages are top of their national league tables. Each has 30% or more of its research rated as world leading, and 70% or above as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. In 7 of the 8 submissions, at least 50% of our research is rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. In over a third of our submissions, the figure is 60% or more. This result places SLLC among the UK's leading Schools of its kind.

The School hosts a number of research centres and institutes that promote interdisciplinary collaboration amongst academics.

As a major concentration of high-quality research and teaching in language-based disciplines, we foster a vibrant postgraduate community. We offer a wide range of master's programmes and research opportunities, united by a common interest: the study of languages and their application in linguistics, literature, translation and cultural studies, including screen studies, critical theory, historical, political, and social studies. Our critical mass of staff in numerous areas, our long tradition of interdisciplinary research and teaching, and our healthy expansion make the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures an ideal place to take a higher degree.

Our flexible taught master's programmes cover a range of areas including: Contemporary China, European Languages and Cultures, Latin American Cultural Studies, Linguistics and English Language, Middle Eastern Studies, Translation and Interpreting Studies.
