The University of Manchester
School of Languages, Linguistics and CulturesThe School comprises some 85 academic staff, 14 postdoctoral researchers, and 70 language-teaching and administrative staff. We view languages such as English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish less as European Languages than as languages of European origin spoken in many parts of the world, alongside our other languages, including Arabic, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Turkish, Hebrew and Persian. The School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (SLLC) achieved an outstanding result in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. Our submissions in Iberian and Latin American Languages and in Russian, Slavonic and East European Languages are top of their national league tables. Each has 30% or more of its research rated as world leading, and 70% or above as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. In 7 of the 8 submissions, at least 50% of our research is rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. In over a third of our submissions, the figure is 60% or more. This result places SLLC among the UK's leading Schools of its kind. The School hosts a number of research centres and institutes that promote interdisciplinary collaboration amongst academics.
