Photo of Kate Stephenson

I studied a BA in English & Communications at Liverpool University in the UK, but following graduation, I felt I hadn't been adequately furnished with the practical skills required to take me down the career path that suited me. I chose the Graduate Diploma in Editing and Communications at Melbourne to give me vocational training I needed to explore the Australian publishing industry. The course is taught by a group of industry professionals who have had hands-on experience in both magazine and book publishing. In its current state, the publishing industry is undergoing a huge shift and it is impossible to teach it from an out-of-date textbook. Our mentors shared insider advice and tips direct from the industry and provided us with plenty of guest speakers, conferences and get-togethers to polish our networking!

If I could give students any advice in any area of media and communications it would be to make sure you take every opportunity to get as much industry work experience as possible. Sometimes this may mean working for free, but the contacts you meet and disciplines you will learn along that way are invaluable.

I would certainly recommend a graduate program in Publishing and Communications at Melbourne to a person who wants to accelerate their existing experience and portfolio and learn more about the industry from a helpful and inspiring team of professionals.
