The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is a major international centre for research and education in medicine, medical sciences, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy. Bringing together healthcare-related research and education, the College consists of the following five schools: Cancer Sciences, Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Dentistry, Health and Population Sciences, and Immunity and Infection The principal base of the College lies immediately between the main campus of the University and the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Other key NHS Trust buildings are also on the same campus including Birmingham Women's Hospital and The Barberry (Psychiatric) Hospital. The College provides an impressive portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research programmes. Programmes at all levels are delivered by some of the UK's most respected clinicians and health professionals, providing you with the best possible learning experience. We offer wide range of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities from short courses to individual modules to full Masters programmes to top up your skills and knowledge and help you stay ahead of the game. The College also delivers high quality distance learning resources to complement traditional teaching methods and clinical practice. Significant developments in the use of lecture recordings, ePortfolios, and the student learning environment, intraMED, further enhance the opportunities for personalised learning and reflective practice. Some of our existing postgraduate taught programmes are currently being developed into a Distance Learning format Each year the College recruits 390 medical students including the Graduate Entry course, 75 dental students, 20 biomedical materials science students, 90 medical science students (plus a further 25 medical students who intercalate into the third and final year of the course), 100 nursing and 65 physiotherapy students. 2013 also sees the introduction of two undergraduate Pharmacy programmes that will initially recruit 70 students per year*. Medical student teaching takes place at all hospitals in Birmingham, but has recently expanded into many of the hospitals in the Black Country.
There are also approximately 500 postgraduate taught students and 350 research students in the College, managed by a cross-College Graduate School. The College has excellent library and reference facilities including the newly refurbished Barnes library and Doug Ellis Learning Hub. The College has a close relationship with the National Health Service, charities, sporting organisations and private sector healthcare. This facilitates the translation of research into real improvements in patient care. The College works closely with many of the teaching hospitals, primary care trusts and training practices across the English West Midlands. Students are encouraged to broaden their knowledge and experience by working across a wide range of organisations and experiencing the varied cultures and demographics of the West Midlands. CampusThe University of Birmingham is situated within 234 acres of parkland and includes large lawns and even a lake. Its architecture is varied; from the grand traditional Victorian redbrick buildings of the Great Hall to the recently refurbished foyer and Barnes library in the Medical School. The campus contains a variety of retail outlets including several restaurants, banks, bookshops and supermarkets. The Barber Institute houses a concert hall and holds an international collection of paintings within its gallery and the brand new state-of-the-art Bramall Music Building completes Joseph Chamberlain's original architectural vision 100 years after the opening of the original, red-brick, Aston Webb building. Sports facilities on campus are excellent. There is a sports hall, gym, swimming pool, saunas as well as an outdoor running track. As Britain's second city, Birmingham is an exciting, bustling, vibrant hub and ideally placed for your choice of study. It is the largest centre for creative and financial districts outside of London and is known for its historical manufacturing and commercial industries with established links both nationally and internationally. Over £9 billion of investment in the city over the last two decades has created new business growth in addition to retail and leisure developments that include canal side bars and restaurants and the famous Bullring Shopping Mall. The city has an enviable location and has convenient road and rail links across the UK, it is also home to Birmingham International Airport. Birmingham is a large multicultural city with a huge range of communities with all that that means in terms of social networks, availability of familiar food and faith communities.
