University of Strathclyde |
Strathclyde is UK University of the Year (Times Higher Education). Strathclyde Law School, in the heart of Glasgow, is one of the top Law Schools in the UK. Both the Times Good University Guide 2011 and the Independent's Complete University Guide 2011 rank Strathclyde inside the top 20% of all UK Law Schools, with the Independent ranking Strathclyde as 12th out of 92 and The Times as 16th out of 91.
For over 45 years we have sought the best ways to provide legal research and education that is relevant in a modern and dynamic world. We have established a reputation for high quality teaching and research in the UK and internationally, not only in the traditional core subjects essential for entry to the legal profession, but also in a wider range of postgraduate subjects such as construction law, human rights law, internet law and policy, international economic law, international law and sustainable development and mediation and conflict resolution. Master of Laws courses
The School is committed to excellence in both teaching and research. It holds the highest grade possible ('exemplary') after the official independent review conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency. High quality teaching is underpinned by a level of staff expertise which is among the very best in the UK. In the most recent official assessment of the quality of staff expertise (the Research Assessment Exercise 2008), 60 percent of the Law School's output was officially graded - 4* 'world-class' or 3* 'internationally excellent' - placing us seventh best in the UK (out of 67) and top in Scotland. What this means is that students are being taught by among the very best legal experts in the UK. Responding to student's needs and key social and legal developments, the provision of innovative taught programmes are another of Strathclyde's hallmarks. Law degrees are not only available in traditional formats, but by two year accelerated, or part-time evening attendance. Masters degrees such as Construction Law, Human Rights Law, Internet Law and Policy, Mediation and Conflict Resolution, Advocacy, Criminal Justice and Penal Change are available for evening study or by online distance learning to suit the needs of professionals and students abroad. The latest pioneering LLMs take a global approach. The LLM Degrees in International Economic Law and International Law & Sustainable Development offer a cross-disciplinary and global approach to postgraduate study, offering the option of studying non-law subjects such as economics, international management, governance, enterprise and sustainability, alongside general law studies. At the heart of the new degree programmes is the 'field' dissertation - the opportunity to put knowledge and skills into practice, and to base the dissertation around real issues while undertaking a placement with a governmental or non-governmental organisation in a range of developing countries Most recently the Law School has launched Scotland's first postgraduate course in mediation and conflict resolution. Mediation is increasingly seen as an essential part of the 21st century conflict resolution landscape in a range of areas such as business, family and employment. Currently offered as a Postgraduate Certificate the aim is to offer the course as a full Masters degree from 2011-12 subject to University approvals. Research and research degreesAn outward-looking focus pervades the research portfolio of the Law School which houses several research centres including the Centre for Law, Computers and Technology, the Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law, and the Centre for Sentencing Research. A vibrant postgraduate research community now exists at Strathclyde in a variety of fields including environmental law, competition law and internet governance. One year MPhil and 3 year PhD degrees are available.
