At the forefront of interdisciplinary research and teaching in Life Sciences, the School is home to internationally recognised research scientists and high quality facilities.

Research Excellence

Research ranges from molecular through cellular to the organism level and spans bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists, animals and plants. It is supported by state-of-the-art computational and experimental technologies. Our integrated research strategy applies multiple technologies to the study of a wide range of biological systems to generate fundamental knowledge as well as a range of impacts of direct relevance to the wider community. Major areas of impact include biotechnology, environment, food security and human wellbeing.

Life Science research at Warwick is much broader than the School alone and our dynamic and highly motivated research groups work closely with Warwick Systems Biology, Warwick Medical School and the departments of Chemistry, Mathematics and Engineering (amongst others) to provide productive interdisciplinary collaborations and projects. Indeed, we have research projects and teaching links with every faculty in the University.

The Warwick Crop Centre is an integral part of Life Sciences and delivers high quality research and training for land-based industries.

Quality Teaching

Warwick offers a range of popular Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees reflecting our expertise across a diversity of Life Science disciplines. Modern teaching laboratories and good teaching and learning support provide our students with flexible and relevant programmes and the opportunity to study alongside world-class researchers and academics. We provide our students with a wide range of skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers. In addition to taught and research degree courses, we offer a portfolio of professional development courses, including accredited modules for postgraduate awards and degrees.

Masters Courses

A taught postgraduate course offers you detailed study in Life Sciences, allowing you to develop specific skills for your future career. Our interdisciplinary MSc in Biotechnology, Bioprocessing & Business Management offers a unique opportunity to combine Life Sciences with Business study.

MSc in Integrative Bioscience and MSc in Integrative Bioscience with Business

MSc in Integrative Bioscience and MSc in Integrative Bioscience with Business. These unique MSc programmes provide extremely flexible training and will deliverexpertise in a range of biological topics plus experience in carrying out anoriginal research project and, if desired, gaining business skills. Theyare relevant forstudents wishing to pursue a research career in academia or industry, go on to complete a PhD, or for thosewho wish to pursue a more general science career. Students taking the Business option will have a competitive advantage when looking for a job in industry.

A wide range of topical modules in biotechnology, biomedicine, crop science, food production, ecology, and the environment are included, and the research project can potentially take the form of a work placement, so providing an excellent platform for career development.

Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate qualificationsare an option and consequently students can choose to spend between three andtwelvemonths at Warwick earning a worthwhile qualification.

MSc Biotechnology, Bioprocessing and Business Management

MSc Biotechnology, Bioprocessing and Business Management. An innovative multidisciplinary course for biotechnology and bioprocessing business managers of the future. The bioprocessing and biotechnology industries are a major component of global industrialised economies with impacts in medicine, food manufacturing, use of natural resources and the fabrication and testing of biopharmaceutical products. Revolutionary new products and services have emerged and the pace of change is high with demands for increased capacity and efficiency, reduced production costs and rapid time to market.

Management of change requires a new calibre of technical specialist; a person capable of analysing and resolving problems in a timely and effective manner. Ideally this specialist will have business acumen and a knowledge base that integrates a broad spectrum of relevant expertise. The Masters in Biotechnology, Bioprocessing and Business Management is focussed to equip its students with the necessary tools and expertise to become such a person, offering key business information and industrially-relevant knowledge.

MSc Environmental Bioscience in a Changing Climate

MSc Environmental Bioscience in a Changing Climate. This course explores solutions for the sustainable provision of food, materials, energy and landscape in a changing global environment. It provides a timely and integrated perspective on environmental bioscience, environmental management and environmental politics and regulation as these relate to land management for the sustainable production of food, energy and ecosystem services. Global climate change and associated environmental issues are overarching themes throughout the course.

MSc Food Security

MSc Food Security. This course will give you an understanding of the elements that contribute to the food security agenda. Countries need to balance local and delocalised production with imports and environmental impact. Suppliers need to ensure year-long provision at both low cost and high quality for discerning and needy consumers. Climate change and world population growth put pressure on governments, producers and consumers to plan ahead for food security.

MSc Sustainable Crop Production: Agronomy for the 21st Century

MSc Sustainable Crop Production: Agronomy for the 21st Century. Crop agriculture provides mankind's increasing population with food, fibres and fuel. This course provides the knowledge and practical skills for how crops are improved, grown and managed. It will also give you the understanding and background to allow you to adapt to future industry changes influenced by climate change, pressure on resources or food shortage

Postgraduate Research Opportunities

MSc by Research

MSc by Research. A practical course based on a single research project under the training and supervision of one of our Research Leaders. Research is interdisciplinary and ranges from laboratory-based fundamental science to field-based applied agriculture and ecology. An MSc by research will give you hands-on experience of your specialism and can be used in preparation for a PhD.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The PhD is based on a single research project under the training and supervision of one of our Research Leaders. The School has strong links with research institutions, business, and industry, both in the UK and overseas, working to develop innovative and exciting areas of research and technology. Research is interdisciplinary and ranges from laboratory-based fundamental science to field-based applied agriculture.

Life Sciences BBSRC Doctoral Training Grant

Life Sciences BBSRC Doctoral Training Grant. The Life Sciences DTG is funded by the BBSRC and has excellent opportunities for training and research. The DTG is cross-campus, incorporating all of the departments and centres carrying out Life Sciences research at the University. Key associated centres include Warwick Systems Biology and Warwick Medical School.

Professional Doctorate

Professional Doctorate. This is a portfolio-based PhD programme carried out in collaboration with an industrial partner. The programme integrates academic training with a series of shorter research projects. It is equivalent in challenge and status to a standard single project PhD, but its flexibility is more appropriate for those pursuing professional rather than academic careers.

In addition to taught and research degree courses, we offer a portfolio of professional development courses, including accredited modules for postgraduate awards and degrees.
