Electronics engineer : Employers and vacancy sources

Graduates in electronics engineering can find employment in a wide range of industries. These include:

  • the electrical and electronics industry - e.g. robotics, digital technology, automotive, telecommunications, electronics consultancies and electronic equipment manufacturers;
  • other engineering industries - e.g. aerospace, energy, chemical and marine;
  • non-electrical organisations - e.g. helping implement and maintain computer systems, telecommunications and other technical equipment;
  • utility companies - e.g. gas, electricity and water;
  • research establishments, both academic and commercial;
  • the public sector, including the civil service, local authorities, hospitals and educational institutions;
  • defence and the armed forces: see the Ministry of Defence (MoD)  and the Defence Engineering and Science Group (DESG) .

A number of large employers such as BT, Vodafone, Siemens, Sony, Philips, Thales and BAE Systems recruit regularly and often provide opportunities for working abroad. Employment can also be found with the many small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK.

Sources of vacancies

Recruitment agencies may advertise vacancies and often handle contract work, particularly for experienced engineers. Look at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC)  website for further details of agencies handling engineering vacancies.
