Company profile

Think ‘world-leading financial organisation’… and ‘individuality’ might not be the first thing that pops into your mind. But individuality is absolutely fundamental to the way we work. We’ll encourage you to be yourself (why would you want to be anyone else?), to develop your unique strengths – and give you all the support you need, to take you wherever you want to go.

No robots please
We may be the UK’s number one insurer, but the last thing we want to do is turn you into a corporate clone. One of the secrets to our success is that we encourage new thoughts and ideas – and actively embrace different backgrounds, cultures and approaches. This commitment has been recognised at the United Nations’ World Diversity Summit; we’ve also been voted as one of the Times 50 Top Places Where Women Want to Work, and commended by lesbian, gay and bisexual lobbying charity Stonewall.

Down to business
So who are we? In essence, we help protect our customers, and make them wealthier too. We provide car, home, health and travel insurance – while also offering pensions, life assurance, long-term savings and fund management services. 53 million customers all over the world currently trust us to look after £381 billion of their hard-earned money, and we posted profits of £2 billion last year (which we were pretty pleased about, considering the challenging financial climate).

We have a 37,000-strong team in 28 different countries across the UK, Europe, America, Asia and the Pacific region. We’re committed to giving a bit back too, so we encourage every one of our employees to take three paid days’ volunteering leave, in addition to their 29 days’ annual holiday. Initiatives like this have led to us being in the global top 10% of socially responsible companies.

From small beginnings in 1696, we’ve grown fast – and during the last few years have brought on board big names like Norwich Union, General Accident and Commercial Union. And that growth means that although our UK offices are based in the lovely, vibrant cities of Norwich and York, there’s plenty of opportunity to travel globally and move around the business.

Our Graduate Schemes
With six business areas to choose from plus lots of training, freedom and support, you’ll have every opportunity to shine when you join us as a graduate. You’ll be given real responsibility from day one, and be assigned both a mentor (one of our managers), and a buddy (who’ll have completed the Scheme recently) – to help you with anything, and make sure you’re settling in.

Salaries start at £23,500-£27,500 depending on the Scheme you join, and you’ll enjoy a first class set of benefits, including a £1,500 bonus in your first pay packet, generous pension and share scheme plus discounts on most of our products.

Now have a look at the six Schemes you can choose from:

  • Business Management
  • Chartered Accountancy
  • Human Resources
  • Actuarial
  • IT & Business Change
  • Insurance
