Energy manager : Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries: £22,000 - £33,000, depending on the work sector and geographical area. Starting salaries may be higher for those with postgraduate qualifications and experience.
  • Range of typical salaries after five to ten years' experience: £30,000 - £62,000.
  • Levels of pay vary widely depending on professional background, the number of staff managed, company size and the nature of the business.
  • Working hours are generally nine to five, sometimes with flexi-time arrangements. Some evening and weekend work may be required to attend meetings and promotional events.
  • The work involves both office and field work.
  • In some contexts, it may be a very isolated job as the only person doing the work; in other cases, there may be strong team support.
  • Part-time work is possible as are career breaks, but it would be desirable to keep up to date with changes in legislation and initiatives.
  • Opportunities are available throughout the UK. Changes in legislation and a need to meet global environmental targets are likely to mean more investment in energy efficiency, and so more, and wider, employment opportunities.
  • The dress code depends on the particular organisation; it may be either smart-casual or collar and tie.
  • In general, the job is not highly stressful, although this may depend on the organisation and the level of responsibility: sometimes complex reports must be produced to strict deadlines; there are often targets that need to be met; and frequent changes in legislation, finance schemes and government initiatives to keep up to date with.
  • Travel may constitute a large part of the role, particularly if the employing organisation has multiple sites. Overseas travel is rare.
