Whether or not you choose to disclose a disability comes down to personal choice, as the 2010 Equality Act prohibits employers from asking job applicants questions about health and disability until a job offer has been made. Some exceptions exist where particular limitations would prevent a person from fulfilling the role.
If you think you would feel more comfortable applying to an organisation which openly demonstrates its commitment to being disability-friendly, look out for the following signs: Does the company’s recruitment literature include a policy statement on disability?; Do its job advertisements carry the ‘two ticks’ symbol, which shows that an employer guarantees to offer interviews to disabled applicants who meet the job requirements?; Is it a member of the Employers' Forum on Disability ? Find out more about disability-related equal opportunities.
