Life as a teacher : What is a golden hello?

A golden hello is a financial incentive package for teachers of priority subjects in secondary state-maintained schools. It is only available to teachers of secondary schools who train through a postgraduate ITT course leading to qualified teacher status (QTS).

The standard deadline for teachers to apply for golden hello is 12 months after completing their induction year. The rate paid for golden hello varies between £2,500 and £5,000 according to the subject and year in which a teacher started their postgraduate training. Payments are made to eligible teachers following application to the local authority. For enquiries about the golden hello scheme, please call the teaching information line on 0845 6000 991.

To find out if you are eligible for a golden hello, try the Golden Hello Eligibility Tool.
